If you are local to Indiana and within driving distance to Seymour, you need to get some sourdough bread from The Living Bread! She makes them out of her home, but it's a very clean space, and they taste delicious.
She charges around $10 a loaf, however they are all organic! You can also pay to have inclusions added or to have a custom, flavored loaf made-which I highly recommend.
Right now she mostly sells to local people that she knows, but if you're interested in getting a loaf let me know!
... Read moreWow, finding specialty sourdough loaves like the turkey-shaped ones from The Living Bread is such a treat! It really makes a meal feel extra special, doesn't it? I mean, who wouldn't be impressed with a beautiful, edible centerpiece like that on the table, especially for Thanksgiving or a holiday gathering?
When I first saw these turkey-shaped sourdough loaves, I was so excited! It's not just about the shape, though. There's something truly magical about good sourdough. The tangy flavor, the chewy interior, and that perfect golden-brown crust – it’s just the best. And knowing it's organic, like the ones from The Living Bread, just adds to the appeal. You can really taste the quality!
For those of us who might not be in Indiana, but are still craving some amazing, uniquely shaped sourdough, don't despair! I've learned a few tips for finding similar hidden gems or even appreciating them more.
First, always check out local farmers' markets or smaller, independent bakeries in your area. Many artisan bakers love experimenting with fun shapes and seasonal designs. You might be surprised at what creative loaves you can find, whether it's a turkey for the fall or something else festive for other times of the year. Often, these bakers also use high-quality, organic ingredients, just like the one I mentioned.
If you're lucky enough to get your hands on a loaf, here are a few ways I love to enjoy mine:
As a Centerpiece: Seriously, just place it on a nice wooden board, maybe with some herbs around it. It's an instant conversation starter!
With Soup or Stew: The hearty crust and slightly tangy crumb are perfect for soaking up rich broths.
Toasted with Butter: Simple, yet divine. A little spread of good quality butter melts into the warm, airy pockets.
For Sandwiches: Thick slices make incredible sandwiches, especially with holiday leftovers like sliced turkey and cranberry sauce.
And for those who are a bit more adventurous in the kitchen, observing these beautifully crafted loaves, especially how they get those intricate scoring marks before baking, is inspiring. I've seen some bakers even use twine to help maintain the shape during the rise and bake, before removing it to reveal the final masterpiece. Seeing them fresh out of the oven, cooling on a cooling rack on parchment paper, is just a joy.
Even if you're not baking it yourself, supporting local, small-batch bakers who put so much love into their craft, like making these adorable turkey-shaped sourdough loaves, is so rewarding. It keeps traditions alive and brings truly delicious, wholesome food right to our tables. Definitely keep an eye out for unique sourdough creations in your own community – you might just find your new favorite!
