My experience at Ninenzaka St Starbucks ☕️✨

Beyond just the Starbucks experience, Ninenzaka Street itself is an absolute must-see in Kyoto. I remember walking up to the Starbucks, and the entire street felt like stepping back in time. Many of the shops along Ninenzaka sell traditional Japanese crafts, sweets, and souvenirs, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll. One tip I wish I'd known beforehand: if you want to truly soak in the traditional street's beauty without the crowds, try to visit as early in the morning as possible. The 'early morning empty street' vibe that some people talk about is real, and it allows you to appreciate the intricate details of the traditional machiya architecture and imagine what life was like centuries ago. I heard that seeing the street lit by historic lanterns at dusk is also magical, though I didn't get to experience it myself this time. It truly makes you feel like you've stumbled into a scene from a classic Japanese film. Now, about that Starbucks exterior! It’s not your typical green logo storefront. The moment I saw it, I was captivated. This Starbucks is housed in a stunning traditional Japanese building, a machiya, complete with a beautiful wooden facade and an elegant tiled roof. The Starbucks logo sign is subtly integrated, making it blend seamlessly with the historic surroundings. It’s truly a unique sight and a testament to Kyoto’s efforts to preserve its heritage, even with modern establishments. It stands out by fitting in perfectly. Inside, as mentioned, finding a spot was a bit of a challenge due to how popular it is, but once we settled onto the tatami mats, the experience felt truly authentic. It's not every day you get to enjoy your coffee in such a traditional setting! While the lighting made photography tricky, the ambiance was definitely memorable. And speaking of memorable, let's talk about the food! Besides the incredible matcha scone – which, seriously, if it's there you HAVE to try it, I still dream about it – Japanese Starbucks locations often have unique menu items you won't find elsewhere. On my second visit to a Starbucks in Nara (which also had its own charm), I noticed they had a variety of breakfast and lunch items that looked delicious. I saw a 'chicken and cheese hot tortilla breakfast wrap' and a 'sausage and egg sandwich' that looked incredibly tempting on the menu. There was also a 'marinara toast' I spotted on a tray going past, which seemed like a surprisingly delightful option for a coffee shop.
