Having A Family Map is Protection!
When I was considering genetic testing for hereditary ATTR amyloidosis, I was anxious.
I was around the same age my father likely began experiencing symptoms, and I wasn’t sure what any of it meant.
During that time, Dr. John Berk shared something I’ve never forgotten:
“Your father may have given you a hereditary disease, but he also gave you a map. A map he didn’t have.”
I knew exactly what he meant.
When my father was diagnosed in 2014, he knew nothing about hereditary ATTR amyloidosis. He knew he had lost his father and a great uncle to what everyone simply called “heart disease,” but no one knew those stories might be connected.
By the time he received answers, he was already very ill.
The map wasn’t a guarantee.
The map was knowledge.

🟡 Knowledge that earlier observation and intervention could be possible.
Today, family history, community knowledge, science, and medicine help us connect dots that previous generations often couldn’t.

Every story shared becomes part of the map for someone who comes after us.
