Metals like solid gold (14k, 18k, 24k) and platinum are top-tier for durability and resistance to tarnish, but they can be costly. Great budget-friendly alternatives include palladium, stainless steel (316L/304), tungsten, and rhodium-plated metals. These metals offer excellent non-tarnish properties and durability without breaking the bank. Pay attention to plating thickness: thick plating ensures a longer-lasting protective coating, while flash plating wears off quickly and exposes the metal beneath to tarnish. Gold-filled jewelry is a smart mid-range option since it has a thick layer of gold bonded to a base metal, making it very durable and less prone to tarnishing. For those with sensitive skin, look for hypoallergenic metals. Nickel-free surgical stainless steel (316L), titanium, niobium, and platinum or palladium are safe choices that reduce irritation risks. Sterling silver can be hypoallergenic if it doesn’t contain nickel.
