why? because I’ve been spending all my time on this stupid little clock app. rather, WASTING all my time. tiktok isn’t the fun space that it used to be; it’s been overrun by tiktok shop, ads for tiktok shop, reviews of tiktok shop, lukewarm unoriginal takes, rage bait, among many other issues.
and despite all of that, I would spend sooo long endlessly scrolling — like, sometimes, hours. I only have so much time on this planet, and I don’t want to lose it on an app that makes 6 hours feel like 10 minutes.
while I still love spending my free time on ig, pinterest, threads, and lemon8… at least I have one less app zombifying me
... Read moreHey everyone! I wanted to dive a bit deeper into why I decided to bid farewell to what many of us affectionately (or sometimes not-so-affectionately) call 'the clock app.' For those wondering, yes, I'm talking about TikTok! It's earned that nickname because of its iconic clock-like logo and the way it seems to make time disappear. One minute you're opening the app, the next, hours have vanished. It's truly uncanny how effective it is at captivating our attention.
My journey with TikTok started like many others – it was fun, filled with creative content, and a great way to unwind. But over time, I noticed a shift. The feed became saturated with endless TikTok Shop ads, the same trending sounds, and content that felt increasingly unoriginal or, worse, designed to spark outrage. I found myself in a constant scroll, feeling like I was just passively consuming rather than genuinely engaging or being entertained. It felt less like a community and more like a time drain.
The image I shared with 'Saying Goodbye to TikTok' truly captures that moment of decision. It was a big step, but seeing that 'Remove App' option pop up on my screen felt liberating. I remembered thinking about all the other things I could be doing with those hours – reading, pursuing hobbies, connecting with friends in real life, or even just enjoying some quiet introspection. The options to 'Share App' or 'Edit Home Screen' suddenly seemed less appealing when the primary goal was to free myself from its grasp. I realized that my mental well-being was taking a hit, and that constant urge to check for new content was becoming overwhelming.
Since deleting TikTok, I've honestly felt a huge weight lifted. It’s like discovering extra hours in the day I didn’t know I had. I’m spending more quality time on platforms that genuinely uplift me, like Instagram for visual inspiration, Pinterest for ideas, and especially Lemon8 for a more curated and positive community vibe. I've also found myself paying more attention to how I manage my screen time across all my devices. For instance, I've started using a simple 'widget clock' on my home screen, not just for time, but as a subtle reminder of its constant passage, encouraging me to be more mindful. I even looked into 'flip clock app iPhone' options for a more aesthetic time-tracking tool, thinking about how I could use time instead of losing it.
If you're feeling similarly 'zombified' by the 'clock app' or any social media, I encourage you to reflect on your usage. It's not about abandoning social media entirely, but about being intentional. Maybe try a digital detox for a week, or set strict time limits. You might be surprised at how much more present and productive you feel. Reclaiming your time is one of the best gifts you can give yourself in this fast-paced digital world. We only have so many hours, and I truly believe we deserve to spend them on what truly matters to us.
I deleted TikTok maybe 6 months ago? Dude my mental health is better and I’m actually present in the moment more. Actually experiencing what’s going on around me.
