Calm your amygdala with this soothing technique! 🌸

Calm your amygdala with this soothing and easy trauma-healing technique! 😌

This is called Havening® and it creates delta waves in your brain.

Delta waves are the slowest, calmest brain waves and when Delta waves are being created in your brain, it communicates to the amygdala that you are safe. This physiological sign of safety allows your amygdala to relax, and under the right circumstances, it even allows traumatic memories to be re-encoded so they are no longer so triggering to our brain and nervous system.

These delta waves also stimulate the release of oxytocin, serotonin, and GABA, reduce our cortisol output, and help us shift from a reactive emotional state to a more soothed state of being.

How does it feel to you?

... Read moreLife often throws curveballs, leaving us feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just plain stressed out. For a long time, I felt like I was constantly battling my own mind, especially when old memories or stressful situations would trigger an intense reaction. I was always looking for practical ways to find a sense of calm, something I could do anytime, anywhere, to help soothe my nervous system. That's when I stumbled upon the Havening Technique, or as I like to call it, the 'Havening touch.' It sounds incredibly simple, almost too good to be true, but the impact it's had on my ability to calm my amygdala and navigate daily stressors has been profound. The beauty of it is that we literally have the power to create a sense of safety in the palms of our hands, or with a gentle stroke of our arms or face. So, how do you do this 'Havening touch'? It's wonderfully adaptable. You can gently stroke your palms, moving your hands together in a soothing rhythm. Another popular method is to stroke downwards on your arms, almost like giving yourself a comforting, moving hug. I've also found stroking my cheeks or forehead to be incredibly effective when I need a moment of quiet reassurance. The key is the gentle, repetitive, self-applied touch. What's happening behind the scenes, and why does this simple action work wonders? This 'Havening touch' helps to generate Delta waves in your brain – these are the slowest, calmest brain waves. When these Delta waves are being created, it sends a powerful message to your amygdala – the part of your brain responsible for your fight, flight, or freeze response – that you are safe. It’s a direct, physiological sign of safety that allows your amygdala to relax. For me, it feels like a soft whisper telling my nervous system, 'It's okay, you're safe now.' Beyond just calming the immediate stress response, the Havening touch does so much more. These Delta waves also stimulate the release of wonderful, feel-good neurochemicals like oxytocin, serotonin, and GABA. At the same time, they help to reduce our cortisol output – that's the stress hormone that keeps us on edge. I’ve noticed a real shift from feeling reactive and on edge to a much more soothed and grounded state of being. It's like my internal volume knob for anxiety gets turned down. One of the most powerful aspects I've experienced is its potential to address traumatic memories. While it's not a magic erase button, under the right circumstances, it can help traumatic memories to be re-encoded. This means those memories are no longer so triggering to our brain and nervous system. For example, a situation that used to send me into a spiral of anxiety now feels distant, less potent, almost like watching an old movie instead of reliving it. It's incredibly empowering to feel that those old wounds no longer hold the same grip. I incorporate the Havening touch into my daily routine, especially when I feel a spike of stress, before a big meeting, or even just to wind down in the evening. It's become my go-to tool for nervous system regulation. Having this accessible technique gives me a sense of control and self-reliance I didn't have before. If you're looking for an effective, gentle way to calm your amygdala and find more emotional peace, I truly encourage you to give the Havening technique a try. See how it feels for you – you might be surprised by the profound sense of calm it can bring.
