Melanin Myth: Why all skin tones need sunscreen 🍋

Dermatologists recommend that everyone should put on a sunscreen of SPF 30 at least. It should be SPF 50 if you are going to be exposed to the sun for long periods. Since the natural SPF13 is way less than what is recommended it is obvious that dark-skinned people need sunscreen as much as fair-skinned people.

All mineral sunscreens protect from both UVA and UVB rays. It protects all skin colors in the same way. Mineral sunscreens form a barrier on the skin and are made from Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, whereas chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin. The heat is absorbed and then scattered to protect from sunburn.

Wearing sunscreen daily and reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours is the best bet when it comes to getting protection from the sun. Other than that, staying home on hot days, wearing protective clothing, and sitting in the shade whenever possible.

Which sunscreen should I use?

I’ll be making another post with this info so follow me and stay tuned ▶️ but my daily use is recommended to @Indie Lee Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50 as part of my daily skincare routine.

Thanks @Lemon8 Beauty for keeping us engaged with trendy topics! 🥰

... Read moreOkay, so we've busted the myth that melanin-rich skin doesn't need sunscreen, but let's dive a little deeper into why and what that really means for us. I used to think my skin was naturally protected, especially when I saw how it could 'glow' in the sun. But I've learned that 'glow' can sometimes hide underlying damage. While melanin does offer a natural SPF equivalent of around 13 – which is way better than nothing! – it's nowhere near the SPF 30 or 50 dermatologists recommend for adequate UVA/UVB protection. This isn't just about preventing sunburn, which might be less noticeable on darker skin. For me, the bigger concern is hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and uneven skin tone that sun exposure can worsen or create. And yes, skin cancer, though rarer, is still a risk for all skin types, and it's often diagnosed later in people of color, making it more dangerous. So, asking 'do black people need sunscreen?' isn't just about avoiding a burn; it's about long-term skin health and fighting issues like post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that many of us deal with. When we talk about the 'melanin skin tones spectrum,' it's crucial to remember that protection isn't a one-size-fits-all. From the lightest to the darkest complexions, everyone benefits from sunscreen. The amount of melanin varies significantly, but even the highest levels don't provide a complete shield. That's why I always look for a 'broad spectrum' sunscreen – like the SPF 50 I use – because it guards against both UVA rays (aging) and UVB rays (burning). A big challenge for many with darker skin tones is finding a sunscreen that doesn't leave a ghostly white cast. This is often an issue with mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) because they sit on top of the skin. However, many brands now offer tinted mineral sunscreens or formulations that blend in beautifully across diverse skin tone swatches. If you're struggling, don't give up! Look for chemical sunscreens too, or newer mineral formulations designed to be sheer. The key is finding one you will wear daily and reapply every two hours, especially if you're out in the sun. Don't forget areas like your ears, neck, and hands! Protecting my skin has become a non-negotiable part of my routine, and seeing the long-term benefits makes it all worth it.
