Owning a car brought me to places I never thought I’d be spending so much time in, like car workshops. 🤣
The dealership I bought my car from had a partnership with a workshop that I had to send my car to for warranty claims, which happened to be on the west side. So I had to travel from the east to the west just to settle these issues.
Workshops can take up to 5 days to fix even small issues, and they don’t appreciate it when you rush them too. 🤣 (Some can be real divas, but I understand they have many cars to handle.)
But still, no regrets, because owning a car has brought me a lot of convenience as a teacher. I lug around 2 big bottles (3 LITRES!) every day in my car as I head out for a full day of lessons. Hahaha.
I could hide inside to have my lunch, and it was also the reason why I met my fiancé. 🤓
That story is for another day!

One thing I quickly realized is how much time can be spent at workshops, especially when dealing with warranty claims through a dealership-linked workshop across town. Traveling from the east to the west side just to fix small issues felt like a commitment, often requiring patience as repairs could take up to 5 days.
Workshops can sometimes feel a little intimidating—some mechanics might treat customers differently, especially if they assume you lack knowledge about cars. This is why finding a trusted workshop is essential. I've had to learn the hard way to watch out for inflated price quotes or unnecessary replacements. It helps greatly to do your own homework, like checking the car's paint quality for signs of respraying or verifying the mileage against the condition of the seats, to spot potential signs of tampering.
For a teacher like me, owning a car was a game changer, allowing me to carry essentials like two giant 3-litre bottles for hydration during long days of teaching. It even gave me a private space for lunch breaks—sometimes the small comforts make a big difference.
Another unexpected highlight was how my car became part of my personal story—it was connected to meeting my fiancé, a moment I cherish and look forward to sharing someday.
Overall, the journey of first-time car ownership involves balancing costs, maintenance efforts, and personal gains. Learning about depreciation, servicing records, and warranty terms early can save worries later on. Also, consider loan terms carefully: while paying off loans early sounds good, keeping cash flow flexible is often wiser advice.
For anyone diving into the used car market, especially alone, always trust your instincts, invest in research, and look for reputable support services. Your car should be a source of freedom, convenience, and even joy, despite the occasional workshop dramas.
