The Heloise dress by @Kristina Sewista is an AMAZING pattern: so amazing we made it twice! It’s so flattering and works up easily. (I’ll also be posting a long-form about this, so stay tuned!) 👖 @Levi’s
Also shoutout to Fabrications for helping me find a new sewing machine… my Singer Heavy Duty decided, after 6 years of being by my side for every project, that it was its time. But as much as I love it, I had no idea what I was missing out on with my new Janome 😍
When I first tried the Heloise dress pattern by Kristina Sewista, I was immediately drawn to how flattering it looked, so I decided to make it twice to truly explore its potential. One of the best parts about this particular project is how beginner-friendly it is, especially with the option to choose between a beginner and intermediate pattern version. I love the idea of upcycling thrifted denim, so using Levi's jeans as fabric gave the dress a unique, sturdy texture without needing additional lining. This made the process quicker but also taught me how useful techniques like serging and pressing seams can be to keep the garment durable and cleanly finished. A significant upgrade in my sewing experience came when my trusty Singer Heavy Duty sewing machine finally stopped working after six years. Switching to a Janome machine revealed a whole new level of ease and quality in stitching, from flat-felled seams to topstitching, which really enhanced the final look of the denim dress. For the neck and armholes, a rolled hem worked perfectly without a lining, maintaining a neat, professional finish while saving time. Adding the Levi's tags as a finishing touch gave the dress an authentic feel, making it a standout piece in any wardrobe. Matching dresses with my friend Sam using this pattern has become a fun tradition, and I highly recommend the Heloise dress as an enjoyable and rewarding project for anyone wanting to dive into sewing with denim or try a flattering, versatile dress pattern. Stay tuned for more tips and a detailed long-form guide to making the Heloise dress that I will be sharing soon!
