Words that would’ve made a difference in my life

I can be here the whole day listing things I wish I had heard, but I didn’t, like:

• I’m here for you

• You are important

• Your feelings are valid

• You are loved

That probably would have changed the course of my life.

My parents were not present in my life. They had a company and even making enough money, they would prefer work more to have more than spend quality time with me and my brother.

I actually grew up feeling pressured because I never was enough.

In Brazil the grade is from 0-10, I was a 9 student and it was not enough, because the good ones are 10 all the time! (That’s what my parents used to tell me)

I was a very self-conscious teenager, I would take responsibility for things I never should! And I had to learn lots of things by myself.

If you are a parent, please, let them know they are enough and loved! That they are worth and beautiful.

That they have the ability of changing the world! And their voice matters!

Tell them you believe them! You are grateful for them!

I wish I had heard that! But I didn’t.

And I will!! Oh my dear future kid, I will tell you all the time! ✨💖

... Read moreMany people grow up with unspoken needs for encouragement and validation that shape their mental health and self-esteem well into adulthood. The author’s experience highlights common struggles faced by children whose parents prioritize work or external success over emotional presence. Phrases such as "You are amazing just the way you are," "I’m proud of you," and "Your ideas matter" can significantly influence a child’s confidence and resilience. Research shows that positive parental communication fosters better emotional regulation and social skills, reducing anxiety and depression risks. When parents affirm that their child’s feelings are valid and that they are worthy of love and pride regardless of perfection, it creates a foundation for healthy self-worth. This contrasts sharply with conditional approval tied to achievements, as the author experienced when a grade of 9 out of 10 was deemed insufficient. The author’s reflections also emphasize the importance of recognizing small wins and encouraging bravery in trying new things. Such messages empower children to take risks, improve self-efficacy, and develop creativity. Learning that their voice matters helps build agency and the belief that they can contribute meaningfully to the world. For parents and caregivers, the takeaway is clear: consistent verbal expressions of love, pride, and belief in their child's unique worth profoundly impact lifelong well-being. This can include simple affirmations like "You are brave for trying" and "I believe in you," which help prevent self-consciousness and excessive self-blame. In sum, the words we speak to children have transformative effects. Offering heartfelt encouragement and validation can equip children with the emotional tools to navigate challenges and thrive. This reinforces why childhood experiences of feeling loved and capable are fundamental and why every child deserves to hear these empowering messages from their parents or caregivers.
