A Suture Practice Savior for Medical Students

Suture practice is an attitude, a way of life.

There’s no such thing as a perfect suture kit or perfect tools—just keep practicing.

Suture whatever you have.

Today I sutured one finger using 7-0 nylon thread.

For the back of the hand, I used 5-0.

There was a slight leak afterward—still need to work on tension control.

A little progress every day!

2025/6/18 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! Following up on my daily suture practice, I wanted to share a bit more about how I approach it and some tips I've picked up along the way. It really is all about consistency, just like I mentioned. First off, finding your practice canvas. While fancy suture pads are great, I've found that a simple medical glove is an excellent, budget-friendly starting point. You can stretch it over your hand or a water bottle to simulate different tensions and curves, mimicking real skin. I often practice on the fingers of the glove, as they offer varied contours, much like real patient anatomy. It's not about having perfect tools, but making the most of what you have. When you're starting, understanding your materials is key. I’ve been using 7-0 nylon thread for delicate, precise work, like practicing fine approximations, and 5-0 nylon for areas that might require a bit more strength, such as the back of the hand. You can really feel the difference in how they handle. Don't be afraid to experiment with different sizes to get a feel for them. A huge part of suture practice is mastering your knots. You might see examples of clean, secure black sutures in images online, and that's the goal! I focus heavily on tying proper square knots – making sure they're not too loose, which can lead to leaks (like my recent experience!), and not too tight, which can cause tissue ischemia. When you see a well-formed circular suture pattern, notice how the knots are uniformly placed and lie flat. This visual feedback from images is so helpful. Speaking of tension control, it’s a constant learning curve. My recent 'slight leak' reminded me of just how crucial it is. Too little tension, and your wound edges won't approximate properly. Too much, and you risk tearing the tissue or strangulating blood supply. When practicing, I often use a pen or my other hand to simulate the underlying tissue, helping me gauge the right amount of force. It's a fine balance, and honestly, something you just develop a feel for with time. Beyond simple interrupted sutures, try exploring other patterns. A continuous suture can be a great way to practice maintaining even tension over a longer stretch. Mattress sutures (horizontal or vertical) are also fantastic for everting skin edges. When you come across images showing different suture patterns, try to understand their purpose and replicate them. It’s like learning a new language, one stitch at a time! Remember, every session, no matter how small, adds up. I try to take pictures of my practice sessions – just like the images you might see – to track my progress and identify areas for improvement. It's incredibly motivating to look back and see how far you've come. Keep practicing, keep learning, and don't get discouraged by imperfect results; they're just stepping stones to mastery!
