Making TikTok’s and signs that say “I’m not Muslim, I’m Persian!” is not gonna curry favor with racists.
I need diaspora Iranians to stop pandering to yt ppl in the west. #iran #diaspora #iranians #persian #america
From my own experience, I've noticed how some diaspora Iranians feel pressured to distance themselves from Muslim identity, emphasizing that they are Persian instead. While this may be an attempt to avoid discrimination, it often inadvertently reinforces harmful stereotypes and panders to white supremacist attitudes. It's important to recognize that many racists in Western countries do not differentiate between Middle Eastern groups — whether Persian, Arab, Muslim, or otherwise. To them, these distinctions are irrelevant; they view anyone from the region through a monolithic, prejudiced lens. I’ve seen situations where well-intentioned members of the Iranian diaspora try to showcase their cultural uniqueness to avoid this stigma, but the reality is that this approach may backfire by feeding into racial biases rather than dismantling them. Instead, embracing a unified and proud identity without apologizing for complex cultural and religious backgrounds can promote solidarity and resilience. Efforts to educate non-Iranians about Iran’s rich cultural heritage are valuable, but they must come from a place of strength and self-acceptance rather than fear or desire for acceptance by racist groups. Moreover, I’ve observed that pandering to racists by attempting to separate oneself from Muslim or Arab identities can isolate diaspora communities from broader coalitions working against racism and xenophobia. Forming alliances with other marginalized groups creates stronger support networks and helps confront systemic discrimination more effectively. Ultimately, the focus should be on combating racist attitudes and policies themselves rather than adjusting identities to fit what racists might find acceptable. By reclaiming pride in their diverse roots and raising awareness about the complexity of Middle Eastern identities, diaspora Iranians can foster more understanding and respect while standing firmly against racism in all its forms.
