If you’ve booked a tour of the Vatican Museum, do NOT tell your taxi to drop you at “the Vatican” or “St Peter’s Basilica”

I know it sounds obvious, but I’ve been getting DMs about exactly this.

These are two completely different entrances… and walking from St. Peter’s Square to the Vatican Museums entrance can take 15–20 minutes (sometimes longer with crowds).

And if your tour has a strict check-in time?

That one mistake could mean missing your tour entirely

📍For the Vatican Museums, you want Viale Vaticano / Musei Vaticani, NOT St. Peter’s Square.

Save this before your trip to Rome and send it to the person booking your tours.

(And yes, we’ve literally watched people running 😅)

... Read moreFrom my own experience visiting the Vatican Museums, I can absolutely confirm how crucial it is to get dropped off at the right entrance. When I took my first guided tour, I was also confused because the names 'Vatican' and 'St. Peter’s Basilica' are often used interchangeably by people unfamiliar with the layout of Vatican City. However, the museum entrance is actually on Viale Vaticano, which is quite a walk from St. Peter’s Square where the basilica is located. To add to the confusion, many taxi drivers don’t have the specifics unless you mention 'Musei Vaticani' or provide the exact street name. I once saw a group literally sprinting up after their taxi dropped them at the wrong spot—they barely made their tour check-in time. For anyone who’s jet lagged or on a tight schedule, missing your entry can ruin the planned day. Interestingly, this problem is widespread enough that many travelers receive warnings online or direct messages reminding them of this. So, my practical advice is always to double-check with your tour provider for the exact address and share it clearly with your driver. Also, consider arriving a bit earlier because the Vatican Museums entrance can be very busy, especially during peak tourist hours. If you plan on visiting both the basilica and the museums, allocate enough time between them, as the walk can take 15 to 20 minutes or more depending on crowds. Some people tackle the museums first and then walk to St. Peter’s Square after, which makes sense logistically. This small but crucial tip really enhanced my Vatican experience and helped avoid unnecessary stress. It's definitely one of those travel nuggets that you want to save and share with fellow travelers heading to Rome!
