Many people believe that autism is a gift from God.

Many people believe that autism is a gift from God.

However, Scripture has never pointed to disorder, sickness, disease, or infirmity as the gift.

The child God gave you most definitely is.

We have to learn to separate the child from the condition affecting the child.

When the disorder is removed, the child remains.

Autism is not your child, and your child is not autism.

... Read moreFrom my personal experience growing up alongside a sibling with autism, I’ve come to deeply appreciate the distinction between a child and their condition. Autism itself is not a gift or blessing in a traditional sense, but every child—regardless of diagnosis—is indeed a precious gift. Scripture emphasizes that children are a heritage from God, highlighting their inherent value and uniqueness. Many families face challenges when trying to reconcile their faith with a diagnosis like autism. It’s easy to feel conflicted, especially when cultural or social messages suggest differently. However, the biblical teachings clearly show that God does not view disorder, sickness, or infirmity as gifts. Rather, these are conditions that Jesus sought to heal, restoring individuals to their full potential as God intended. This distinction has real-life implications for how we approach caregiving, advocacy, and love. By separating the identity of the child from the diagnosis, families and communities can foster environments of unconditional love and support. It encourages focusing on the child's strengths, talents, and personality rather than defining them solely by autism. Additionally, understanding autism as a condition—not the child—can empower parents and caregivers to seek therapies, educational resources, and spiritual guidance with clarity and hope. For example, I have witnessed how positive reinforcement, specialized education programs, and faith-based support networks significantly improve the well-being and growth of children with autism. In spiritual terms, recognizing that autism is not a gift but that each child is a heritage from God can also challenge misconceptions. It invites believers to pray for healing while simultaneously embracing their child with joy and acceptance. This balanced view is vital for maintaining hope and faith without disregarding the realities of the condition. Ultimately, every child deserves to be seen for who they truly are beyond any label. Autism may be part of their journey, but it does not define their worth or identity. Embracing this perspective can transform how families, faith communities, and society at large support autism spectrum individuals, fostering dignity, love, and inclusion for all.

Autism Has Many Co-Occuring Conditions
Comorbidities of autism are sometimes where a doctor may stop. Got PMDD? “Take the pill and ✌️ we’ll see you if it doesn’t work out.” But, like over 90% of autistic women have PMDD and the pill isn’t going to address that. An autistic system is prone to dysregulation, histamine issues (w
