I remember my first time trying to make them – it felt daunting, but I promise, this homemade version is super easy once you get the hang of it! My Easy German Steamed Dumplings Recipe Here's what you'll need to make these delicious flour dumplings: All-purpose flour (approx. 2-3 cups, depending on dough consistency) Warm milk (about 1 cup) Sugar (2-3 tablespoons, plus a little extra for steaming) Active dry yeast (1 packet or 2¼ teaspoons, if using yeast for rising) A pinch of salt Melted butter (2-3 tablespoons, plus more for steaming) Water (for steaming) Let's Get Cooking! Activate the Yeast (if using): In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and the yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it gets foamy. This tells you your yeast is alive and ready to work! Make the Dough: Add the flour, remaining sugar, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix everything until it forms a shaggy dough. I usually start with a spoon, then switch to my hands. Knead and Rise: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it for about 5-7 minutes until it's smooth and elastic. Don't skip this step – it's crucial for that fluffy texture!
