The Second Child Stereotype 😅😩

They say the second child is supposed to be the wild one… but so far, ours has completely broken the stereotype.

Our first is calm and easy, and somehow our second has been even easier as a baby!

Now I’m curious—was the second child stereotype true for you? Or did your little ones surprise you too? 👇

... Read moreIt's fascinating how many theories and stereotypes surround birth order, especially when it comes to the second child! While my own experience has challenged the common 'wild second child' stereotype, it's worth exploring why these ideas even exist. Many believe that second-borns often develop a distinct set of personality traits because their parenting experience is inherently different from the first. Think about it: first-time parents are often meticulous, perhaps a little anxious, and follow every rule in the book. By the time the second baby arrives, parents are usually more relaxed, confident, and perhaps a bit more flexible. This shift in parenting style can subtly influence a child's development. For instance, the 'wild' stereotype might come from second children having more freedom to explore, or perhaps feeling the need to carve out their own identity in a family already shaped by an older sibling. They might learn to be more independent or assertive to get attention, sometimes being labeled as 'the difficult one.' Some commonly attributed characteristics of second-borns include being natural peacemakers, often very social, adaptable, and sometimes a bit rebellious or competitive. They tend to be good at negotiation and compromise, having grown up navigating sibling dynamics. They might be less inclined to follow rules just because they're rules and more likely to question things, which can sometimes be seen as 'wild' or 'mischievous.' My own little one, with their infectious smile, is incredibly happy and adaptable, yet already shows signs of a distinct personality that's wonderfully different from their older sibling! It constantly reminds me that while stereotypes are fun to discuss, every child truly marches to the beat of their own drum. The 'second child stereotype vs. reality' is a popular discussion point because every child is unique. While birth order theories offer interesting frameworks—and yes, there are even popular 'birth order personality quizzes' that aim to categorize us—they are just that: theories. Factors like individual temperament, gender, the spacing between siblings (whether they are 16 months apart or several years), and individual parenting styles all play a much larger role than just their position in the family. It's often said that second-borns are more flexible because they have to adapt to an existing family structure, but this adaptability can also make them incredibly easygoing. For parents expecting their second, or those already in the thick of it, remember that your child will develop their own unique personality, regardless of their birth order. It's truly a joy to watch them grow into themselves. Have you ever considered 'second son syndrome' in your family or among friends? This idea suggests second sons might feel a need to distinguish themselves from an older brother, sometimes leading to heightened competitiveness or a strong drive for success in different areas. It’s another fascinating layer to the complex picture of birth order. Ultimately, welcoming a second child brings a new dynamic, new joys, and often, a lot of surprises that beautifully break any preconceived notions. What unique traits have you noticed in your second-born, and did they defy any expectations?

Wait until they are a toddler! My second was great as a baby, once he was a toddler wild as hell. 5 years old and still Wild. When he was 1 I used to have to put my dining room table chairs on top of the chair or he’d be on top of the climb. He’s 5 and still climbs things, counter etc

Let’s be honest we have ALL heard this phrase. As a nurse myself I get it tbh. I have encountered people who disregard pain, problems, and most commonly mental health and the somatic effect that come with it. I am someone who loves to listen to my patients and their stories. Even a validation o
