The shorter days and lack of sunlight can really impact mood, often leading to seasonal depression, which is something many people in this city face. One strategy I found helpful is maximizing natural light whenever possible, whether that’s through morning walks or sitting near windows during the day. Light therapy lamps have also been a game changer during those dark days when stepping outside feels impossible. It’s also important to stay socially connected. Even if you don’t feel like it, making plans with friends or joining local groups can lift your spirits. Physical activity, like indoor yoga or light workouts, can boost endorphins and help combat that sluggish, heavy feeling. Lastly, practicing mindfulness and acceptance helps me acknowledge the seasonal struggle without letting it define my whole outlook. When I remind myself that winter will pass and take active steps to care for my mental health, the months feel more manageable. If you’re in Toronto and feeling the pressure of the approaching winter like I do, know that you’re not alone, and there are ways to cope that can make a real difference in your wellbeing.
