Stop buying props. Do this instead

It’s easy to think better food photos come from buying more props.

So we keep collecting:

More plates

More napkins

More boards

More cutlery

But honestly, most of the time we already have enough.

Instead, we need to learn how to use our props intentionally. Pay attention to colour, texture, and how the pieces work together.

That usually improves our photos a lot more than another plate ever could.

If you’re building a collection and want to know what’s actually worth buying, I included a starter prop guide in my book: The Ultimate Guide to Food Styling, available on Amazon.

Comment or DM FOOD STYLING and I’ll send you the Amazon link to purchase it. 📚 ♥️

... Read moreWhen I first started food photography, I thought that having a vast collection of props would automatically upgrade my images. I spent quite a bit buying plates, napkins, boards, and cutlery, hoping to create unique setups each time. But soon, I realized that accumulating more stuff didn’t help as much as I expected. Instead, I learned that how I used what I already owned made the true difference. One personal game-changer was paying close attention to how colors and textures complemented each other. For example, pairing a rustic wooden board with a matte ceramic plate created a warm, earthy vibe that made the food pop without distractions. It’s not about having all the props, but about how intentionally you arrange and coordinate them. I started experimenting with neutral tones mixed with occasional vibrant accents to guide the viewer’s eye directly to the dish. Additionally, focusing on the story behind the food styling helped me choose props more thoughtfully. Sometimes less is more—using one statement piece rather than cluttering the frame with many items keeps the image clean and impactful. The textures—like a crumpled linen napkin or a natural wood surface—added subtle depth and interest that elevated the photo. If you’re struggling with the urge to buy more props, I recommend revisiting what you have and exploring creative combinations. Try placing items in different angles or layering textures to see how small changes can transform your shots. I also found reading guides like The Ultimate Guide to Food Styling invaluable for understanding the essentials of building a prop collection that truly serves your style. In the end, your creativity and intentionality are your best tools. A well-thought-out setup with thoughtfully chosen elements usually trumps sheer quantity. So next time you feel tempted to purchase another plate or napkin, take a moment to explore your existing collection—you might be surprised by the beautiful photos you can create with what’s already at hand.
