Writing is being a slave to the characters.

2/1 Edited to

... Read moreAs a writer, I've often found that the characters in my stories seem to have a mind of their own, steering the narrative in directions I hadn’t originally planned. This experience resonates perfectly with what happens when characters take over, as described in the monastery chapter example. Sometimes, a scene or chapter intended as a quick stop to move the plot forward transforms into something much richer — a moment of profound character development and plot twists that demand more attention. This phenomenon occurs because well-crafted characters come with their own desires, histories, and motivations that naturally influence the story's flow. When you ‘‘become a slave to the characters,’’ as the author beautifully puts it, you learn to listen closely to what the characters reveal through their interactions and conflicts. Instead of rigidly controlling the plot, you embrace the unpredictability, allowing authentic character growth to flourish. In practice, this means a writer must be prepared to adapt, sometimes rewriting or extending parts of the story to accommodate deeper character arcs. This approach tends to enhance the narrative’s emotional impact and keeps readers engaged with believable, evolving personalities rather than static plot devices. From personal experience, these unplanned detours of storytelling often turn out to be the most meaningful parts of the narrative. They can set the foundation for later twists and developments that surprise both the writer and the readers. It is a reminder that the creative process is dynamic, and that characters, when fully realized, deserve the freedom to lead the story’s journey.

This book is getting a ton of buzz this year, and if I’m being honest, I had no interest in reading it. I never read Huck Finn in school and I never really planned to, so a reimagining of it felt like it couldn’t be the book for me.  A few weeks ago one of the women in my writing group (who has
