Menstrual Hygiene Routine

Having a go-to routine takes away a lot of the frustration that comes from being on my cycle. Staying clean and minimizing odor are my main focus when it’s that time of the month. Here is the routine that helps me do both:

1. In the morning the first thing I do is take a shower with the odor targeting body wash. It gets rid of any period odor from the night before and makes sure I don’t develop a smell throughout the day. 💌 Brand: Naturium Mandelic Acid

2. Getting a diva cup was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Not only are my periods shorter, they’re less painful because I’m not putting all those chemicals in it. It was a bit weird the first few times I inserted it, but now it’s just a part of my routine. 💌 Brand: Diva Cup & Saalt Cup Wash

3. Throughout my cycle this is the only wash I use. Morning and night, it’s formulated to clean and rebalance your pH while you’re on your period. 💌 Brand: L. Foam Wash Period Care

4. At night the only thing I care about is getting clean and there’s nothinggggg that cleans me more thoroughly than antibacterial soap. In one step I address sweat, excess oil, and period or body odor from the day. 💌 Brand: Dettol Original Antibacterial Soap

5. Sleeping with a Diva Cup is NOT recommended…… butttt I’ve done it 🤷🏾‍♀️🫣 DO NOT do it though. Once I remove the cup, period underwear is what I use at night. There are so many different brands with different levels of absorption, it’s all about doing your research and finding one that’s address your needs. 💌 Brand: Thinx & Hanes

6. Because it has boric acid, I use the monistat wash once my cycle ends for three days total. Boric acid cleans more thoroughly when it comes to any type of discharge, especially when there is still residual 🩸 still coming out of you. 💌 Brand: Monistat

And that’s my hygiene routine when I’m on my period!

From my personal experience, establishing a consistent hygiene routine helps prevent discomfort and odors while supporting overall vaginal health. Starting your day with a shower using an odor-targeting body wash, such as one with mandelic acid like Naturium, can effectively neutralize night-time odors and keep you feeling refreshed. The mild exfoliating properties of mandelic acid also support skin renewal without irritation. Using reusable menstrual cups like Diva Cup reduces exposure to chemicals found in some disposable products and can shorten and ease periods over time. Initially, it might feel awkward to insert, but with practice, it becomes a seamless part of your routine. To maintain hygiene, brands like Saalt provide specialized cup washes to safely clean the cup without harsh chemicals. During your cycle, a pH-balanced foam wash formulated for intimate areas is crucial to maintain the delicate vaginal environment. Products free from fragrances, sulfates, and parabens, such as L. Foam Wash Period Care, help clean without disrupting natural flora. At night, an antibacterial soap like Dettol Original thoroughly removes sweat, oil, and accumulated odor from the day, ensuring deep cleanliness without over-drying. However, sleeping with a menstrual cup is not recommended as it may cause discomfort or leakage; instead, period underwear from trusted brands like Thinx or Hanes offers comfortable absorption tailored to your flow. After your period, using a wash containing boric acid, like Monistat, can be beneficial for eliminating residual discharge and maintaining balanced vaginal flora. Boric acid helps gently restore pH and reduces odor until the cycle fully resets. Integrating these steps into a mindful hygiene routine takes away much of the stress associated with menstruation, making those days more manageable and less painful. Additionally, choosing products aligned with your skin sensitivity and absorption needs ensures personalized care. Always stay hydrated and comfortable, and consider consulting healthcare providers if you experience any persistent discomfort or unusual symptoms during your cycle.

You can sleep with a cup in. Just make sure you’re taking it out and cleaning it at the very least every 12 hours. 🥰
