THE CONS OF HAVING A SCRUB COLOR CODE IN NURSING 👚

While having a scrub color code may seem like a simple system, they come with some cons. A scrub color code is a color of scrubs your hospital has you wear depending on your position at that facility. My scrub color code is ceil & navy blue at my hospital.

As someone who loves to wear colors (especially pink), this has been challenging to adjust to. Here’s why it’s not as great as it seems. 🩺

•Limited Wardrobe Choices: Sometimes, a scrub color code feels like i’m stuck wearing the same thing every day. It’s nice to have a personal choice in what we wear, but with strict color codes, it can feel like you’re losing that option.

•Lack of Personality: Nurses are creative, fun, and full of so much personally - but when you’re stuck in a certain scrub color, it’s hard to express yourself.

Do any nurses feel the same way about scrub color codes? Let me know your hospital color code in the comments! ⬇️

... Read moreI totally resonate with the feeling of limited wardrobe choices and a lack of personal expression when it comes to hospital scrub color codes! It’s such a common experience among us nurses. While it can be frustrating, I’ve often wondered about the reasoning behind these codes and how we can still sprinkle a bit of our personality into our daily work attire. From what I’ve gathered, these 'hospital scrub color charts' are often implemented for a few key reasons. Primarily, it’s about swift patient identification. Imagine a chaotic ER or a busy ward – a quick glance at a nurse’s scrub color can instantly tell a patient or another staff member their role. For example, clinical staff like Registered Nurses (which I proudly am!) might be in navy blue or ceil blue, while surgical techs could be in green, and perhaps charge nurses in a slightly different shade or a distinct style to stand out. It helps streamline communication and ensures everyone knows who's who, enhancing patient safety. Historically, certain colors like white were associated with doctors for cleanliness, or pastels for pediatric units, giving each color a subtle 'scrub color meaning' within the hospital ecosystem. But let’s be real, wearing the same 'scrub colour code' day in and day out can get monotonous! That's where we get creative. Even with a strict 'navy blue' or 'light green' mandate, there are ways to make your uniform feel more like *you*. For instance, I've found that investing in quality scrubs from brands like 'OFIGS' can make a huge difference in comfort and fit, helping you feel more confident and put-together. A well-fitting scrub can genuinely elevate your look, making you feel a bit more 'hot nurse scrubs' worthy, even if it's just for yourself! Accessories are another lifesaver. While we can’t always wear a bright pink top, a comfy pink fleece jacket over my uniform or a fun pair of Crocs in a vibrant color can add that pop of 'personal style' without breaking hospital policy. Think about subtle things like a stylish pen light, a unique badge reel, or even a colorful water bottle. These small touches allow us to express ourselves, reminding us that we're more than just our job title. For someone like a 'scrubs charge nurse', who might have a bit more leeway or a slightly different style expectation, adding a professional yet personal touch can be crucial. It’s all about finding that balance. We respect the hospital's need for uniformity and patient safety, but we also deserve to feel good and express a part of our identity. So next time you're stuck in your designated 'ceil blue' or 'navy blue' scrubs, remember there are always little ways to make them your own. What are your favorite ways to personalize your scrubs within your hospital's color code?
