What’s one skill nursing school didn’t teach you?

Nursing school prepared me for meds and procedures, but nothing prepared me for prioritizing multiple critical patients at once or reading subtle changes in someone’s condition. Those instincts only come with experience.

Also, nursing school doesn’t emphasize how IMPORTANT it is to learn how to communicate with patients. You can be the smartest nurse, but if patients don’t trust you then it means nothing.

Fellow nurses: what’s the biggest thing you learned on the job that school missed? 🩺

Totally agree on the communication part! Patients need to feel heard and understood first and foremost.
