A Moment From My Shift I’ll Never Forget 🩺
There’s a moment from one of my shifts I still think about. 🤍
We had to call a rapid response on one of my patients. The room filled quickly — people talking over each other, oxygen monitors going off, everyone moving quickly trying to figure out what to do. In the middle of all the chaos, my patient reached for my hand and said to me, “I’m not ready to die yet.”
I remember freezing for a second because how does someone even respond to that. I told them we were doing everything we could and not to worry. I don’t even remember the exact words — just that my voice sounded calm while my chest felt tight.
We did everything we were supposed to do. Every intervention. Every step. And still, they passed a day later in the ICU.
I went home after that shift and couldn’t stop replaying it for days. Wondering if they felt scared. Wondering if holding their hand helped at all. Wondering if there was more I could’ve done.
This is the part of healthcare no class or textbook ever prepared me for.
If you work in healthcare — what’s one moment from a shift that still stays with you? 🫶🏼
