"By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes."

THIS. This is what I'm looking for when I pick up a thriller.
where you don't actually know what to believe until the very end. everything keeps you second guessing. it's such a *thrill* (I'm cheesy, shh it's fine.) I was even thrown by the cover up until a certain point! the whole time I was like, what do the cats have to do with this? 😂 you too shall find out. seriously, hands down in my top thriller reads.
everything from the spooky little Halloween town, the trauma, the plot twists, was all done incredibly well. a spectacular debut Rachel! 🖤🐈⬛
there is a certain character that I have beef with still, but I can't say more. they know what they did. it's definitely one you should go in relatively blind, but read over the trigger/content warnings at the least! there are dark themes happening. I'm gonna leave my review at that, so I don't end up spoiling anything!
thank you to St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books, and the author, Rachel, for gifting me with an e-arc.
... Read moreYou know that feeling when you pick up a book and it just *clicks*? For me, it's almost always a psychological thriller, especially one set in a small, seemingly idyllic town where everyone has secrets. And let me tell you, 'No Rest for the Wicked' by Rachel Louise Adams absolutely nails this subgenre!
What is it about small town thrillers that just gets under your skin? I think it’s the sense of claustrophobia, the idea that there’s no escape, and that the monsters often wear familiar faces. In a big city, you can disappear; in a small town, your past is always lurking. This book truly delivers on that premise, weaving a narrative where every character seems to be hiding something crucial, and the truth is buried deep under layers of community facade. The 'creepy small town thriller' vibe is so palpable, you can almost feel the autumn chill from the pages, especially with that gorgeous cover art that hints at a cozy, fall-themed aesthetic even as the story plunges into darkness.
When I’m looking for my next read in this vein, I always seek out a few key ingredients. First, the atmosphere has to be just right. 'No Rest for the Wicked' creates an incredibly immersive setting, a spooky Halloween town that feels both inviting and deeply unsettling. It perfectly balances that autumnal charm with an underlying sense of dread. Second, I need complex characters driven by their pasts. This book excels in exploring 'buried trauma' and intricate 'family secrets,' which are the lifeblood of any good psychological thriller. You find yourself constantly trying to piece together who's trustworthy and who's not, understanding the motivations behind their actions, however dark.
And then there are the 'plot twists'! Oh, how I love a good plot twist! This book kept me guessing until the very last pages. Just when I thought I had it figured out, something else would pop up and send me back to square one. It’s that exhilarating feeling of not knowing what to believe that makes these stories so addictive. The murder mystery element is expertly handled, with clues scattered just subtly enough for you to ponder, but never so obvious that you spoil the fun for yourself.
Seriously, if you're like me and crave a story that explores the darker side of human nature, where the past refuses to stay hidden, and a small community harbors shocking secrets, then Rachel Louise Adams' debut is an absolute must-add to your TBR pile. It’s a masterclass in suspense and character development. Just a friendly reminder, as the author mentioned, it does delve into some dark themes, so it’s always a good idea to check content warnings if you need to. But trust me, for a gripping 'psychological thriller small town secrets' experience, this one is an absolute standout. You won't regret diving into this wicked tale!
