How to get your baby to LOVE tummy time!

Both of my babies have loved tummy time! It didn’t necessarily start off that way from the very beginning but by 2/3 months they were doing it regularly.

My number one tummy time tip is to do naked tummy time! I put down a puppy pad incase they pee. Being completely naked during tummy helps them more around more freely and it also increases their sensory input.

Going outside for tummy time also helps them enjoy it because they have nature to look at and different sounds to listen to!

Using a boppy or pillow to prop them up can be a good tool to use occasionally because it helps build their confidence and makes it less frustrating!

My last tip is to put your hand on their lower back and put light pressure, pressing down and back toward their toes. This helps them lift up their head easier and is similar to using the pillow because it makes it slightly easier for them as they build strength and confidence!

It also helps prevent positional plagiocephaly (flat spots) and gives them a whole new perspective on their world. You might be wondering, "When should I start?" The answer is, as early as possible! Even newborns can benefit from short, supervised bursts of tummy time. I started with just a minute or two on a blanket after diaper changes, gradually increasing the duration as they got stronger. Remember, "newborn tummy time supervised on blanket" is key – never leave them unattended! As they grow, you'll see them progressing from simply lifting their head to pivoting, reaching, and even attempting that impressive "superman pose" where they lift their arms and legs simultaneously. This is a fantastic sign of developing core and back muscles! To truly encourage those "baby tummy time smiling" moments, active engagement is crucial. Get down on their level! Make silly faces, sing songs, or gently tap a colorful toy just out of reach. This encourages them to lift their head and engage their neck muscles, directly supporting "baby tummy time strengthening neck." Building on the idea of "outside tummy time," you can also vary their environment indoors. Try placing them in front of a baby-safe mirror – babies are often fascinated by their own reflection! Or use a high-contrast playmat that captures their attention. Changing scenery keeps things interesting and provides new visual and auditory stimulation. You might recall my tip about using a boppy or pillow and applying light pressure on their lower back. These techniques are fantastic for giving them that initial boost of confidence and making it easier to lift their head and chest. As they gain strength, you'll notice them naturally trying to push up with their arms more, leading towards that impressive "superman pose tummy time infant" action. To further encourage this, place engaging toys slightly above them, prompting them to reach and lift. This isn't just about strength; it's about building coordination and spatial awareness too. What if your baby still isn't a fan? Don't despair! Every baby is different. I found that consistency, even in short bursts, was more effective than trying for one long, frustrating session. Try different times of day – perhaps right after a nap when they're refreshed, or after a diaper change but before a feeding (a full tummy isn't ideal for tummy time!). If they start fussing, it's okay to take a break and try again later. The goal is positive association, so we want to avoid it becoming a battle. Remember, even a few minutes a day adds up and makes a big difference in their development. Keep celebrating every tiny lift of their head, every little push-up, and especially those precious "baby smiling during tummy time" moments.
