Melting-Down: History, Memory, and Narratives
As photographs that used to record history slowly melt over time, how can memories remain?
"Melting: History, Memory, and Narratives," an art exhibition that invites us to explore the fragility of memory through a negative film that has deteriorated into both evidence of the past and an art object by Suthi Kunavijanont and 11 other guest artists.
The beginning of the exhibition came from 630 rolls of personal negatives, including over 22,680 black and white and color images recorded by Suthi throughout the 1977-1997 decade, both historical events, locations and personal lives, but over time, heat and deterioration gradually shattered many images, leaving only traces of color and chemicals to the question of what are the surviving memories.
Instead of trying to recover these images, artists chose to use deterioration as a precursor to their creation, reinterpreting the films of important past events damaged by natural deterioration to question the authenticity of, and invited 11 other artists from various fields: Amanti Shusuwan, Proud Thiraprapha, Shalit Nakpawan, Tul Hirayan, Tewavat Phatra Commercial, Rainwater Chasing Sathrufar, Nino Sai, Manit Srivanishphumi, Vivii Kunavishyanon, Supicha Teaching Rih and Ip Kan Commerce to interpret the issues. History, memory and disappearance through each person's perspective and experience.
The exhibition is on display inside the Khun Mission Trading Building, a historic building in the middle of the youth neighborhood, which itself is like a witness of the times. The 12 artists are scattered throughout the five floors, allowing the audience to explore the relationship between place, object, and story that is left in memory.
"Melting" may not only talk about the deterioration of the negative film, but it invites us to view disappearance as part of recognition, because as time slowly obliterates certain images, what remains is not just evidence of the past, if it is a question that we have of history, memory, and narratives that we still choose to pass on.

นิทรรศการ "ละ-ลาย" นอกจากจะเป็นการจัดแสดงผลงานศิลปะแล้ว ยังเป็นบทสนทนาเกี่ยวกับความทรงจำที่ถูกละลายและเปลี่ยนรูปแบบเมื่อเวลาผ่านไป ฟิล์มเนกาทีฟซึ่งเป็นวัตถุทางประวัติศาสตร์กลับกลายเป็นสื่อที่บันทึกการเสื่อมสภาพของอดีตอย่างชัดเจน เป็นการสะท้อนให้เราเห็นทั้งความงามและความเปราะบางในการเก็บรักษาความทรงจำและเหตุการณ์ต่าง ๆ ด้วยประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวจากการไปชมและสัมผัสงาน ผมรู้สึกประทับใจในการเชื่อมโยงระหว่างศิลปะและความทรงจำที่สีและลายของฟิล์มที่เสื่อมสภาพได้สร้างขึ้น ไม่ใช่เพียงความสมบูรณ์แบบของภาพถ่าย แต่เป็นเรื่องราวที่ถูกเล่าใหม่ในรูปแบบที่แตกต่างออกไป การเสื่อมสภาพของฟิล์มจึงเหมือนกับการเลือนลางของความทรงจำในหัวใจของมนุษย์ ที่บางครั้งเราไม่จำเป็นต้องย้อนคืนกลับทุกอย่าง แต่เพียงยอมรับความเปลี่ยนแปลงและหาความหมายใหม่จากสิ่งที่หลงเหลือไว้ นอกจากนี้ การจัดแสดงภายในอาคารคุณากิจเทรดดิ้ง ยังเสริมสร้างบรรยากาศความขลังของสถานที่ที่เป็นพยานทางประวัติศาสตร์อีกชั้นหนึ่ง ทำให้ผู้ชมเกิดความรู้สึกเชื่อมโยงกับอดีตผ่านสถานที่จริง การเดินชมผลงานหลายชั้นช่วยให้เราได้สำรวจความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสถานที่ เหตุการณ์ และความทรงจำในรูปแบบที่ลึกซึ้งและมีมิติ ศิลปินที่เข้าร่วมสร้างสรรค์ผลงาน 12 คนต่างก็นำเสนอความคิดเห็นและประสบการณ์ของตนเองเกี่ยวกับความทรงจำและการเลือนหายในรูปแบบหลากหลาย ทั้งนี้ยังเป็นการชวนตั้งคำถามถึงความเที่ยงแท้ของประวัติศาสตร์และเรื่องเล่าที่ส่งต่อ รวมถึงบทบาทของศิลปะในการทำหน้าที่เป็นพยานและตัวกลางในการสำรวจและถ่ายทอดเรื่องราวเหล่านี้ สำหรับผู้ที่สนใจประวัติศาสตร์ไทย ย่านเยาวราช หรือชื่นชอบงานศิลปะที่มีความลึกซึ้งด้านความหมาย "ละ-ลาย" เป็นนิทรรศการที่ควรไปสัมผัสด้วยตัวเอง เพราะนอกจากจะได้รับความรู้และประสบการณ์ใหม่ ๆ แล้ว ยังเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้เรารู้จักมองความทรงจำในแง่มุมที่กว้างขึ้นและลึกซึ้งยิ่งขึ้นด้วย
