Could Your Medication Be Causing POTS Symptoms?

My meds are giving me POTS symptoms. Can I do anything about it?

7/20 Edited to

... Read moreExperiencing POTS symptoms that coincide with starting or changing medications can be frustrating and concerning. Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) affects your body’s ability to regulate blood flow and heart rate when standing, leading to dizziness, rapid heartbeat, fatigue, and other symptoms. Some medications, particularly those that affect blood pressure, heart rate, or fluid balance, may inadvertently worsen these symptoms. Common drug classes linked to POTS symptom aggravation include diuretics, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, and antihistamines. For example, diuretics, which reduce blood volume, might intensify dizziness and fainting episodes in POTS patients. Beta blockers can sometimes cause a drop in heart rate and blood pressure, which may either help or worsen symptoms depending on individual circumstances. If you suspect your medication is contributing to POTS symptoms, keep a symptom diary noting the timing, severity, and any new or changed medications. This information is valuable when consulting with your healthcare provider. Never stop or adjust medication doses without professional guidance, as underlying conditions require careful management. In some cases, alternatives or dosage adjustments can be made to minimize side effects while still effectively treating the primary condition. Non-pharmacologic strategies like increased hydration, salt intake, and physical therapy can complement medication management. Remember, POTS is complex and varies widely among individuals. Open communication with your medical team is essential to tailor a plan that addresses both your POTS symptoms and overall health. Sharing your experience and monitoring your response helps pave the way for better symptom control and improved quality of life.
