Okay, fellow foodies, I just had to share my latest culinary adventure in San Diego! I stumbled upon Baikohken, a Hokkaido-style ramen spot that's been recognized by the Michelin Guide, and let me tell you, it completely lived up to the hype. If you're searching for authentic Japanese comfort food, this is your next stop. What truly sets Baikohken apart is their incredible broth. They simmer it for a whopping 13 hours, blending pork and seafood to create a deep, savory flavor that you can taste in every single spoonful. It's clear they put a lot of intention into every detail, from their housecrafted sauces, including their distinct miso and soy sauce, to the chashu that’s marinated overnight until perfectly tender. This dedication really shines through. My absolute favorite from what we ordered was the Butter & Corn Ramen Soy Sauce. This is a true Hokkaido specialty, and it's everything you want in a hearty, rich bowl of ramen. The sweetness of the corn combined with the richness of the butter and that savory soy sauce base? Chef's kiss! It felt like a warm hug, perfect for any day, even if San Diego doesn't get “cold winter months” like Hokkaido! For those who crave a bit of a kick, the Spicy Garlic Bom! Ramen is a total winner. It’s packed with flavor, has a satisfying heat, and is super filling. Seriously, you won't leave hungry. We also dove into some amazing sides to complement our ramen. The Hokkaido Croquettes (which are essentially delicious potato croquettes) were crispy on the outside and wonderfully creamy inside – an absolute must-try. And of course, you can't go wrong with classic Fried Takoyaki and fresh Edamame. To wash it all down, we tried their Japanese cocktails: the TaKaRa CHU-HI Fuji Apple and White Peach. They were perfectly refreshing and added a fun, authentic touch to the meal. Baikohken, located at 690 University Ave in San Diego, really brings the authentic flavors of Asahikawa, Hokkaido, to life. It's more than just a meal; it's an experience that transports you straight to Japan. If you’re a ramen enthusiast or just looking for an incredible dining experience in San Diego, make sure to add this Michelin Guide-recognized gem to your list. You won't regret it!
