Book Review: The Passengers on the Hankyu Line

I first noticed this book at Kinokuniya a while back, where stacks of it were displayed right at the front of the bookstore. The cover caught my eye (yes, I judged the book by its cover), and that was what prompted me to pick it up.

It’s a light-hearted and gentle read. Each chapter is written from a different character’s perspective, gradually expanding on the same incident. However, the beginning of each chapter can be a little confusing, as there are quite a number of characters involved. I found it difficult at times to keep track of who was who, especially when the perspective shifted.

There isn’t a single main character, and the story doesn’t delve very deeply into any one person’s life. Instead, it feels like observing passengers who board and alight from a train—brief glimpses into different lives. Throughout the novel, themes of courage, standing up against injustice, small acts of revenge, and quiet love stories are woven in.

"Better to cut ties with people whose values make you uncomfortable. Otherwise, the longer you stay with them, the more you risk compromising your own values for the sake of theirs."

Rating /⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: 3.5/5

... Read moreOne aspect I particularly appreciated about this novel is how it captures fleeting moments in the lives of everyday people. While the story shifts between multiple perspectives, making it a bit challenging to follow each character at first, it ultimately paints a rich tapestry of human experiences. It felt like observing real passengers boarding and alighting from the Hankyu train, each with their own struggles and hopes. Additionally, the novel subtly addresses how personal values can be tested in relationships, as highlighted by the poignant quote about cutting ties with people who make you uncomfortable. This theme resonated with me, as it emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself. If you’re someone who enjoys character-driven stories with intertwined perspectives rather than a single main plotline, this book offers a refreshing take. Just be prepared to pay close attention during the shifts in perspective to fully appreciate the nuances. Finally, noting the OCR text from the book's image, the rating of 3.5/5 aligns with my impression—it’s a solid read for those looking for a thoughtful and calming story, even if it doesn't dive deeply into individual backstories. For fans of Japanese novels or those curious about everyday life glimpsed through multiple lenses, this title is worth exploring.
