My son just started BJJ this year. 🥹

2024/12/14 Edited to

... Read moreIt feels like just yesterday I was signing my son up for his first BJJ class, and now he's already deep into his white belt journey! I never thought I'd be spending my evenings watching my little guy grapple on a mat. When he first mentioned wanting to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I admit I was a little hesitant. All I could picture were intense bouts, but his enthusiasm, that spark in his eyes, was infectious. It quickly became less about 'mom vs. apprehension' and more about 'mom supporting son's passion'. Watching him, a small white belt among others, has been an emotional rollercoaster. There are days he comes home beaming, showing me a new move he learned, trying to pull me into a 'gentle' armbar (which often ends in giggles, thankfully!). And then there are days he's frustrated, wondering if he'll ever get a technique right. As a mom, it's tough to see, but it's also incredible to witness his resilience. I've often joked about trying it myself, just to see what he goes through! 'Mom vs. Son: The BJJ Edition' would certainly be interesting, though I suspect he'd have the upper hand already. It’s not about competing with him, but understanding his world a little better. Sometimes, he'll even try to teach me a basic position, and I'll play along. It’s a wonderful way to connect and share in something he truly loves. It hasn't always been smooth sailing, of course. There have been moments of frustration, even tears, when a move just wouldn't click, or when he felt outmatched by someone bigger or more experienced. As a mom, my first instinct is always to comfort, but I've learned to let him work through it. I've seen him come home, watch instructional videos, and go back to class with renewed determination. That commitment, that grit, is something BJJ seems to instill, and it's truly amazing to witness. But BJJ isn't just about what happens on the mats. I've seen him develop a newfound discipline, respect, and confidence. He's learning to problem-solve under pressure, to keep trying even when things are tough. These are life skills that go far beyond any submission hold. As a parent, watching this growth is truly priceless. The rewards, however, far outweigh any bumps in the road. Beyond the physical fitness, which is fantastic, it's the mental fortitude that stands out. He's learning to think strategically, to stay calm under pressure, and to respect his training partners. These are qualities that will serve him well in every aspect of life. I often see him applying the same focus he uses on the mats to his schoolwork now, which is a huge bonus! Of course, 'momlife' also includes the practical side: the endless gi washes, making sure he has his water bottle, and being his biggest cheerleader at open mats. It's a commitment, but one I wouldn't trade for anything. Seeing him tie his white belt, knowing he's part of a supportive community, fills my heart. To any other moms out there whose sons (or daughters!) are thinking about BJJ, I say go for it! It's more than just a sport; it's a journey of self-discovery, discipline, and growth. And for us moms, it's a front-row seat to watching our kids transform into strong, resilient individuals. My son's white belt year has taught me so much, and I can't wait to see where his BJJ path takes him next!
