Kids on the internet?!
In my private life I’ve been asked quite a few times why I don’t show my kids face on the internet, why I block his face, or blur it; and I figured why not answer this question in my very first Lemon8 post? 🍋
So without further ado, here’s my (shortened) list of reasons why I don’t show my kids face.
🩵. There are WAY too many creeps on the internet
How many times have you seen, read, or heard a story about a child who goes through..a tough time (to keep it PG) and the suspect found them through the internet?? I’ve read way too many 🥺.
🩵. He’s too young.
My kids a toddler, he has no way of knowing all the repercussions, responsibilities, or safety of being on the internet. That being said once he’s old enough, he can decide. Even then I’ll probably end up getting his permission before posting a photo that includes his face.
🩵. Deters fake “friends”
Before I decided to take his face off of social media, I would have “friends” telling me he’s cute, looks just like me, saying they should come see him soon, etc. But as soon as I stopped showing his face all of a sudden only a handful of people ever ask about him.
🩵. Personal preference
Everyone has their own opinion, preference, etc. This is just mine, it makes me feel safer in our ever growing electronic world. My main job is to keep him safe and happy, and this helps me do so.

Additionally, many parents feel it’s not their place to make these decisions for their kids before they are old enough to understand the consequences of exposure. Respecting a child's autonomy in such matters encourages healthier future conversations about internet safety. Furthermore, the idea of “fake friends” or superficial connections highlights the need for true relationships, prompting some parents to shield their lives from superficial engagement that comes with public sharing. Ultimately, every family must evaluate their comfort levels with online sharing, weighing safety and privacy against the desire to share life's moments. Keeping children safe and happy in an increasingly digital world remains a top priority for responsible parents.
