A Fun Trip One Hour from Miami

I needed a break from the noise of Miami , so I took a quick one-hour drive to Wakodahatchee Wetlands , and it was totally worth it. It’s hard to believe this peaceful 50-acre wetland was once a wastewater site. Now, it’s full of life.

Walking the ¾-mile boardwalk, I saw all kinds of birds, some building nests just feet away. A great blue heron flew right over me, and I actually spotted an alligator slowly gliding through the water. I even saw a marsh rabbit hop across the path, and at one point, an otter popped its head up, looked around, and vanished. I couldn’t stop smiling.

What really surprised me was how quiet and relaxing it was, even with other people around. Everyone just seemed to be taking it in. It’s totally free, super easy to get to, and perfect if you want a dose of nature without going far.

If you're in Miami I highly recommend spending a few hours at Wakodahatchee. I’ll be back , with better binoculars next time! 😄

Wakodahatchee Wetlands is an oasis not far from Miami, providing a unique opportunity to engage with nature without extensive travel.
