Genre: Christian Fiction

My review:

hello bookish friends📚🌟

this was a captivating story about spiritual warfare between angels & demons. you follow several characters to see how they are influenced as people, through their actions by the spiritual realm. the characters come across a challenge when people start acting strange & a bad guy is trying to buy out the local college. little do the characters know how much involvement the spiritual realm has on the outcomes of their challenges.

i would most definitely recommend for my christian fiction enjoyers! this was a book my mom lent to me, genuinely have no idea where she got it but i just read it. if you’re not new here you know that i read literally just about anything, and i will NOT DNF a book. the only reason i gave it a 3/5 was because it was a long read, and kinda wishy washy and christian fiction isn’t my normal go to for funsies. otherwise it was pretty alright!

... Read moreAfter sharing my initial thoughts on Frank Peretti's 'This Present Darkness,' I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what makes this book such a significant and often-discussed piece of Christian fiction. My 3/5 personal rating was based on some personal preferences regarding length and genre, but objectively, there's so much richness to this story that deserves more discussion, especially for those curious about its impact and themes. This novel isn't just a simple tale; it's an intricate tapestry of spiritual warfare that Peretti weaves with incredible detail. I found myself constantly drawn into the unseen world of angels and demons, who are portrayed not as distant entities but as active participants in the lives of the residents of Ashton. It truly makes you think about the spiritual dimensions of our own world and how battles might be fought on a plane we can't always perceive. The way Peretti connects the mundane struggles of the town's characters—like a local college facing a takeover—to these epic supernatural conflicts is masterful and incredibly thought-provoking. Speaking of visuals, I have to mention the iconic book cover for 'This Present Darkness.' The copy I read, similar to what I've seen online, often features a dark, almost shadowy figure with winged elements, set against a somewhat ominous sky, sometimes with birds in flight. This imagery perfectly encapsulates the book's central theme: the struggle between light and darkness, good and evil, that plays out both visibly and invisibly. It’s a cover that instantly communicates the intense spiritual drama awaiting the reader, and it became a memorable part of my reading experience. For many, 'This Present Darkness' is just the beginning. Its companion novel, 'Piercing the Darkness,' continues the saga, often exploring similar themes from different angles or following new characters. If you found yourself intrigued by the first book's premise, exploring the sequel is highly recommended to fully immerse yourself in Peretti’s expansive spiritual universe. Together, they form a powerful duology that has left a lasting mark on Christian literature, inspiring countless discussions about faith, doubt, and the nature of spiritual reality. Peretti's ability to blend suspense, character development, and profound theological concepts is what truly sets this book apart. He doesn't shy away from depicting the darker aspects of spiritual oppression but always anchors the narrative in hope and the ultimate triumph of faith. I believe this balance is why 'This Present Darkness' has resonated with so many readers over the years and continues to be a staple in Christian fiction circles. It’s a read that challenges you to look beyond the surface and consider the spiritual battles that might be influencing the world around us. If you're looking for a book that offers both an engaging story and deep spiritual reflection, this one is definitely worth exploring.
