Are you getting office chair butt?

Office chair butt is the negative effects of sitting for long periods of time- this may be something to be aware of if you work from home or in an office setting.

Sitting all day may be causing a flatter butt because of muscle loss.. here are a few tips to avoid getting office chair butt

1) sit for 30, stand for 30. Take periods of time to stand up and work, walk around your house or your office.

2) go on a walk for your lunch break. You can even add in a few sets of squats or lunges

3) go to the gym after work. Don't go from sitting at your desk to sitting on the couch

All in all, if you sit all day from work, just make sure you stay active throughout the day to avoid any side effects :)

... Read moreOkay, so we've all heard about 'office chair butt,' and maybe you're even starting to feel like it's happening to you. I totally get it! For a long time, I didn't realize how much sitting all day was impacting my body, especially my glutes. It's more than just a flatter shape; it's about muscle loss and a whole host of related issues. Let me share a bit more about what's really going on and some extra tips I've picked up to combat it. First, let's dive a little deeper into 'what is office chair butt.' It's not just an aesthetic thing. When you spend hours glued to your seat, your glute muscles become inactive. This can lead to something called 'gluteal amnesia,' where your brain actually " forgets" how to properly activate these muscles, even when you try to use them. This constant compression can also affect circulation and lead to tight hip flexors, which further inhibits glute activation. So, yes, it can lead to a flatter shape, but more importantly, it can contribute to lower back pain, poor posture, and even make exercises like squats less effective because your glutes aren't firing properly. I definitely noticed my lower back aching more before I started making changes! The article already shared some fantastic basic tips, but let's expand on how to really 'fix office butt' and keep those glutes strong. The 'sit for 30, stand for 30' rule is a game-changer. I actually set a timer on my phone or computer to remind myself. Even if it's just to walk to the kitchen for water or stand while I take a call, those micro-breaks add up. And speaking of walks, taking a proper 'walk on your lunch break' is essential. Instead of just strolling, I try to add in a few extra steps or even find a quiet corner to do some quick 'lunges or squats' – it truly makes a difference in getting blood flowing and activating those muscles. Sometimes I'll even do a quick set of calf raises while waiting for my coffee to brew! Beyond movement breaks, what about those times you're stuck at your desk? You can still engage your glutes! Try 'office chair glute contraction exercises.' Simply squeeze your glutes as hard as you can for 5-10 seconds, release, and repeat. You can do this discreetly throughout the day. Another great one is seated leg lifts: lift one foot a few inches off the floor, keeping your core engaged, and hold for a few seconds. These small 'office chair glute exercises' help keep the muscles awake. And for the grand finale, 'gym after work' is non-negotiable for me now. It's so easy to go from sitting at your desk to sitting on the couch, but that's exactly what causes the problem! I prioritize compound movements like squats, deadlifts (even with light weights or just bodyweight), and lunges to really build and strengthen my glutes. Incorporating exercises like hip thrusts or banded glute kickbacks a few times a week has also been incredibly effective. Remember, consistency is key, and finding a workout buddy or a routine you enjoy can make it much easier to stick to. Remember, combating 'computer butt' or 'desk butt' isn't about perfection, but about making consistent, small efforts. Your glutes will thank you, and you might even find yourself feeling more energetic and less prone to aches and pains throughout your day. It's all about reclaiming your glute strength and overall well-being!
