Peanut Island in Florida has the BEST snorkeling!

Snorkeling at Peanut Island was an unforgettable experience, filled with amazing marine life and underwater wonders. Here’s how you can experience it too:

Getting There:

Peanut Island is accessible by boat, kayak, or paddleboard. I opted to paddleboard over from a nearby beach, which added an extra layer of adventure to the trip. If you prefer a more relaxed approach, there are water taxis and boat rentals available from various points in West Palm Beach.

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely! The journey to Peanut Island is as enjoyable as the destination itself. Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life. Here are some of the incredible creatures I encountered while snorkeling:

1. Cuttlefish: These fascinating creatures were a delight to watch with their unique color-changing abilities.

2. Parrotfish: The vibrant colors of the parrotfish added a splash of beauty to the underwater scene.

3. Spadefish: These graceful swimmers were easy to spot and admire.

4. Huge Hermit Crab: An unexpected and exciting find on the ocean floor.

5. Huge Starfish: The star of the snorkeling trip, standing out with its size and vibrant color.

Snorkeling at Peanut Island offers a fantastic glimpse into the diverse marine life that calls this area home. Whether you’re an experienced snorkeler or a beginner, the island’s calm waters and abundant marine life make it a perfect spot for exploration. So grab your gear and dive into the adventure – it’s definitely worth it! 🌟

... Read moreOkay, so you’ve heard about the incredible snorkeling at Peanut Island, and you’re ready to dive in! I totally get it – my first trip there left me absolutely buzzing. But beyond just knowing it’s amazing, getting there and making the most of your day takes a little planning. Let me share some of my personal tips to help you have an unforgettable adventure, especially if you're chasing those clear, turquoise waters and diverse marine life! First off, let’s talk about actually getting to Peanut Island. While I loved the adventure of paddleboarding over, it's not for everyone, especially if you're new to it or carrying a lot of gear. The most popular option is definitely the water taxi. You can catch one from Riviera Beach Marina. They run pretty frequently, usually every 15-20 minutes, and it’s a quick, scenic ride across the Intracoastal Waterway. It’s super convenient, and they’ll drop you right onto the island near the main snorkeling spots. If you're driving, there's ample parking near the marina, but it can fill up fast on busy weekends, so try to arrive early. If you’re keen on paddleboarding or kayaking like I was, you can rent equipment from several places in West Palm Beach or Riviera Beach. Just be mindful of the currents, especially near the inlet. I always check the tide charts before heading out – crossing at slack tide (the period between high and low tide when the water is still) makes for a much easier paddle. The aerial view of Peanut Island really highlights how accessible it is, whether by boat or by paddling across those inviting clear waters! Now, for the snorkeling itself, timing is everything! I’ve found that high tide is absolutely the best time to snorkel in the lagoon. The water is deepest and often much clearer, giving you incredible visibility to spot all those amazing creatures like the vibrant parrotfish, fascinating cuttlefish, and those massive starfish I mentioned earlier. Early mornings are usually calmer, too, with less boat traffic and fewer people, making for a more peaceful experience. What should you bring? Beyond your mask, snorkel, and fins, don’t forget some essentials. Reef-safe sunscreen is a must to protect both your skin and the delicate marine ecosystem. Water shoes or dive boots are also a good idea, as some areas around the rock jetties can be a bit rocky. And trust me, bring plenty of water and some snacks! There are no concessions on the island, so you’ll want to stay hydrated and fueled up after all that swimming. A waterproof camera is a game-changer if you want to capture those close-up underwater views of a hermit crab scuttling or a spadefish gracefully swimming by. Safety is paramount. While the lagoon is relatively calm, always be aware of your surroundings. Currents can be stronger near the inlets, so stick to designated snorkeling areas, especially if you’re a beginner. Always snorkel with a buddy, and never touch or disturb the marine life – we want to keep this beautiful habitat pristine for everyone to enjoy! Finally, don't just stay in the water! Peanut Island isn't just about snorkeling. Take some time to explore the island itself. There are walking paths, shaded picnic areas, and even an observation deck where you can get a fantastic panoramic view, much like those stunning aerial shots. The sandy beaches are perfect for relaxing after your swim. It’s a full day’s adventure, offering a perfect blend of underwater exploration and island relaxation. Trust me, it's a true Florida gem, and with these tips, you're set for an unforgettable day!
