ADHD productivity hack that actually works…shoes 👟

I bought a second pair of my outdoor shoes just to wear inside…and suddenly my brain is like:

“Okay. We are a very capable woman who does things now.” 😂👟

I’ve realized that my brain needs a physical transition to shift into “let’s start” mode.

Shoes off = consider me retired for the day

Shoes on = CEO of Getting Stuff Done (for at least 11 minutes 🤪)

It sounds small, but the way it helps kick my butt in gear has been game-changing.

Anyone else have oddly specific systems like this?

Wearing a specific pair of shoes just indoors creates a subtle but impactful mental shift. It acts like a starting line in a race—putting on these shoes signals your brain to switch from leisure to action. This concept is similar to other behavioral triggers like changing your location, adjusting lighting, or having a dedicated workspace. It’s important because ADHD brains often struggle with initiation, and these physical transitions help jumpstart focus. Another benefit is that the shoes provide a boundary between ‘work time’ and ‘relaxation.’ Without such cues, it’s easy to blur the lines and end up procrastinating or feeling overwhelmed. I’ve also found that pairing this with a short, manageable goal session—like 10-15 minutes of focused work—leverages the psychological momentum. Saying to yourself, “Just this small amount of time” feels achievable and less daunting. Overall, small hacks like these aren’t about completely transforming productivity overnight but about gently nudging your brain to cooperate. Clothes, habits, or objects with clear symbolic meaning can be powerful ADHD tools. Give this shoe hack a try and see how it helps you reclaim your focus and motivation during busy days.
