Simple ADHD Home Hacks for Busy Days 🙌

I know how quickly things can pile up and feel chaotic at home. That’s why I’m sharing these ADHD-friendly home hacks that have helped me keep my space in check without the stress! These tips are simple, effective, and perfect for making everyday life a little more organized.

1. Create a “Drop-Zone”

-A designated spot near the door for everyday items keeps clutter from spreading throughout the house.

2. Use a DOOM Basket

-A basket to toss items in when you don’t have time to deal with them—then sort through it when you’re ready.

3. The 10-Second Rule for Clutter

-If it takes less than 10 seconds to put something away, do it right away to prevent buildup.

4. Use Clear Totes and Organizer Bins

-Clear containers make it easy to see where everything is and help reduce distractions from searching.

5. The Sticky Note Reminders Trick

-Write quick reminders on sticky notes and place them where you’ll see them to stay on track throughout the day.

6. The “Same Spot for Everything” Trick

-Create designated spots for items to avoid losing things and reduce mental clutter.

7. “Use it, Then Reset It” Habit

-After using an item, put it back where it belongs (or in the doom basket) immediately to prevent clutter from piling up.

8. The Task Batching Hack

-Group similar tasks together and do them all at once to stay focused and save time.

9. The Pre-Planning Habit

-Planning ahead for the next day helps reduce decision fatigue and makes your morning run smoother.

If you’re looking for easy, ADHD-friendly ways to keep your home clean, give these a try! Let me know which one works best for you!

... Read moreIt’s amazing how quickly clutter can accumulate when your brain is wired a little differently, isn't it? I’ve been there, staring at a pile of ‘stuff’ and feeling completely overwhelmed about where to even begin. The hacks shared above are game-changers, but I wanted to add a few more thoughts on creating a truly ADHD friendly home and a sustainable ADHD home system that actually works for adults. One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that organization for ADHD isn't about perfection; it’s about reducing friction and building supportive environments. That’s why concepts like the DOOM Basket and a dedicated Drop-Zone are so powerful. For me, my 'doom basket' isn't just a place to toss things; it's a visual cue that says, "It's okay to not deal with this right now, but it's contained." The key is to schedule a regular (even if short!) time to sort it. Maybe it’s 15 minutes every Sunday afternoon. This prevents the basket from becoming a permanent 'doom pile' itself! Similarly, my 'drop-zone' near the door isn't just for keys and mail; it's where my kids' school bags go immediately, and where I put my reusable shopping bags so I never forget them. It’s all about making the path of least resistance the *right path*. When we talk about ADHD home hacks that actually work, we’re often talking about externalizing our memory. Those Sticky Note Reminders Trick aren't just for forgotten tasks; I use them to remind myself of my *wins*! A sticky note on the fridge saying "Clean fridge on Saturday!" is great, but also one saying "You remembered your meds today!" can be a huge motivator. And for the 10-Second Rule for Clutter, it’s a brilliant strategy for preventing overwhelm. I've found it helps to reframe it: instead of "I have to put this away," think "I can put this away quickly, and future me will thank me." It turns a potential mountain into a series of tiny molehills. Beyond the specific hacks, consider the broader ADHD friendly home design. This often means embracing clear storage solutions. Using Clear Totes and Organizer Bins isn’t just aesthetic; it’s essential for my brain to 'see' what’s inside, reducing the mental effort of remembering or searching. If I can't see it, it often doesn't exist to me! I also combine the "Same Spot for Everything" Trick with clear labeling, especially in cupboards or drawers. Even if I know where something should go, a label confirms it and saves a split second of hesitation. Finally, integrating the Pre-Planning Habit and Task Batching Hack has been revolutionary for managing my energy. Planning outfits the night before, as seen in the OCR, might seem small, but it eliminates a major morning decision point, freeing up mental energy for more complex tasks. When I 'batch' tasks, like paying all my bills at once or doing all my laundry in one go, I find I get into a flow state that helps me stay focused and actually complete everything. It’s about working with your ADHD, not against it. Remember, it’s a journey, not a destination. These ADHD home systems are designed to support you, not to be another source of pressure. Experiment, find what resonates, and be kind to yourself along the way. You deserve a calm, organized space!

Back when I was in therapy, my therapist would always push me to get the tasks that were quick and easy (“if it takes less than 5 mins, just do it”) done. One time, she literally told me to reorganize the bookshelf that I had been putting off doing for like 3 weeks while on call and it took less than 2 mins.
