Holiday Touches for People Who Hate Clutter 🎁

I always love decorating for Christmas, but a lot of the inspo I find online involves going “all out”: big statues, hanging ornaments, clutter everywhere. And for those of us that like clean, open spaces, it can be hard to find the balance between festive and chaotic.

Over time, I’ve learned ways to decorate for the holidays that make a difference without crowding the space. A few small changes can make the season feel special without feeling messy. Here are my favorites:

Ribbons & Bows on Cupboards

This instantly makes your whole kitchen feel decorated, without taking up space. I find a big roll of ribbon, cut and tape it to the inside of the cupboard, and glue on a bow to the middle.

Christmas S&P Shakers

It’s something we leave out all the time - so swapping them out for Christmas ones is a cute little holiday touch without adding anything unnecessary.

Throw Pillow Covers

I love swapping out everyday items for something more festive, and throw pillows are the perfect way to do that. They really help your living room look festive while using what you already have.

Swapping Out Everyday Decor

This is my favorite way - I swap out everyday pieces for holiday ones. It doesn’t take up any room, and you can just use the same nail it was already hanging on.

Utilizing Space

I try to avoid clutter by decorating furniture I already have up - like my entertainment center, book cases, etc. It brings in the holiday look while keeping everything open.

Holiday Throw Blankets

Another swap - I switch out my usual throw blankets, for Christmas ones. It adds just the right amount of holiday touch without going all out.

Simple Table Decor

To keep my table from getting crowded, I use a single holiday placemat as a guide and add a few pieces of decor. It adds the festive look, without cluttering my table.

These easy swaps let me enjoy a festive home without filling it with unnecessary stuff. Little changes make a big difference and keep everything feeling clean and cozy!

... Read moreFor anyone who loves the holiday spirit but hates clutter, finding the right balance between festive and tidy can feel like a challenge. The idea of using decorations like ribbons & bows on cupboards not only adds a charming seasonal touch but also leverages often overlooked spaces, making your kitchen festive without sacrificing openness. Similarly, swapping ordinary salt & pepper shakers for Christmas-themed ones is a simple yet effective way to bring holiday cheer to everyday essentials without adding bulk or clutter to counters. Another great tip is to update throw pillow covers and throw blankets with holiday patterns or colors. These swaps transform your living space instantly while using the furniture and items you already own. Changing out everyday decor items with seasonal versions keeps the atmosphere fresh and festive without the need for extra storage or new furniture. Maximizing existing surfaces like entertainment centers or bookcases for decor helps incorporate holiday spirit while keeping your space organized. By decorating such furniture, you add focal points that celebrate the season yet avoid overwhelming your rooms with unnecessary items. For dining areas, using a single holiday placemat as a centerpiece guide lets you add touches of festive decor without crowding the table, maintaining functionality and style at the same time. The key to tasteful and clutter-free holiday decorating lies in thoughtful swaps and creative use of your existing environment. These small but impactful changes make your home feel cozy, inviting, and joyful without turning it into a storage space for excessive decorations. Embracing minimalism during the holidays helps ensure that your living spaces remain comfortable for family and guests, while still celebrating the joyful spirit of the season. In summary, festive home touches like ribbons on cupboards, holiday-themed salt & pepper shakers, swapping throw pillow covers and blankets, utilizing furniture surfaces, and simple table styling are effective ways to enjoy the holidays with minimal clutter. These strategies keep your living environment clean, open, and cozy—perfect for those who want to celebrate the season without overwhelming their space.

Yess. I love this. I donated A LOT of my holiday decorations this season. I do not want the clutter at all. The only thing I’m missing is switching out my wall decor but I definitely plan to do that also. I hang the stockings on the mantle and have garland and lights there. Other than that it’s trees really. And the dining table centerpieces.
