How I train new grad surgery nurses

When I’m training new grad orienteers in the OR, I really try to keep it hands-on and practical. I know how overwhelming it can be at first, so I focus on building confidence one step at a time. I walk them through preference cards, show them how to actually read and understand them—not just follow them blindly—and I explain the why behind each step so it sticks. Same with the med cheat sheets, especially for locals. I want them to feel solid on dosages and usage, not just rely on memory under pressure.

I also make a point to teach them the machines they’ll be using that day. We go over how it works, what it’s for, and how to troubleshoot if something goes wrong. I usually walk them through it once, then have them run the next case so they get real experience. Afterward, I flip the script and have them teach me the case—it’s my favorite part because it shows me what clicked and where they might need a little more guidance. It's all about giving them space to learn while making sure they know I’ve got their back

... Read moreTraining new graduate surgery nurses effectively is crucial for their development and success in the operating room (OR). A hands-on approach is vital; it helps alleviate their initial overwhelm and builds confidence step by step. Start by guiding them through the essentials, like preference cards, explaining not only the 'how' but the 'why' behind each process. This deeper understanding helps ensure they are not just memorizing, but truly comprehending their responsibilities. In addition to preference cards, utilizing medication cheat sheets plays an important role. New nurses should feel confident with dosages and applications, especially when facing the pressure of real patient scenarios. Familiarizing them with the equipment they'll be using is another key aspect. Encouraging them to learn the functionality and troubleshooting methods for surgical machines prepares them for unexpected challenges on the job. Letting them operate the machine during real cases strengthens their experiential learning. One effective strategy is to flip the roles after they've had some practice. When they teach back what they've learned, it solidifies their understanding and uncovers areas where they might need more instruction. This peer-teaching method cultivates a strong learning environment and reinforces their skills while also developing their confidence. Overall, having a supportive training atmosphere where new grad surgery nurses feel secure to ask questions and express uncertainty is essential for nurturing competent healthcare professionals.
