Book Review: A Quick Thriller 💡

Initially, I was drawn in by the plot of a successful city woman venturing out to the middle of nowhere to stay with a complete stranger. Just because? Pretty random.

Although a bit predictable, the book was suspenseful enough to keep me engaged. Everything moved along pretty fast throughout the book, including the relationships between the characters. The plot twist was expected. Overall, a decent quick read.

⭐️Overall rating: 3/5

... Read moreOkay, so let's talk more about Jeneva Rose's 'You Shouldn't Have Come Here.' When I first picked it up, I was intrigued by the premise: a successful city woman, Grace Evans, decides to escape to the middle of nowhere, specifically a remote Airbnb in Wyoming, after a personal crisis. Who does that? And to stay with a complete stranger, Calvin, who is essentially a house sitter? That alone set off alarm bells for me, and I loved that initial feeling of unease. The book really plays on the classic thriller trope of isolation and the dangers of trusting strangers, especially when you're vulnerable. Grace is clearly trying to outrun something, and her decision to trust Calvin, despite all the red flags, creates this constant tension. You're just waiting for things to go wrong, and they certainly do. I found myself questioning Grace's choices pretty much every other chapter, which, honestly, is what makes a good psychological thriller for me. It's not about flawless characters, but about realistic, if sometimes frustrating, human decisions under pressure. Now, the original review mentioned that the plot felt a bit predictable, and I can definitely see that. If you're a seasoned thriller reader, you might pick up on some of the breadcrumbs early on, especially regarding the 'plot twist.' However, even knowing where things might be headed, the execution kept me turning pages. It's less about the shock of the twist itself and more about how the characters react and how Grace navigates the increasingly dangerous situation she finds herself in. The pacing is incredibly fast, which helps gloss over some of the more obvious plot points. The relationships, particularly between Grace and Calvin, develop at a breakneck speed, adding to the feeling of chaos and desperation. The setting of rural Wyoming also plays a huge role. Rose does a great job of making you feel the isolation and the vast emptiness, which just amplifies Grace's predicament. You truly get the sense that help is far away, and she's entirely at the mercy of her host and the environment. This sense of being trapped, both physically and emotionally, is a strong point of the novel. While the ending might not deliver a jaw-dropping, never-saw-it-coming revelation for everyone, it still ties up the narrative in a satisfying way. It’s a compelling read for those who enjoy psychological thrillers that lean into suspense and character-driven tension, even if some elements feel familiar. If you're looking for a quick, engaging read that will keep you on the edge of your seat without being overly complex, then 'You Shouldn't Have Come Here' is definitely one to consider. It’s perfect for a weekend escape, much like Grace's, but hopefully with a much better outcome for you!
