But first, how you doin’? 🤎

What are people doing when they don’t know what to do with their pain?

A lot of the answer is:

Performing.

Hiding.

Escaping.

Pretending.

Overachieving.

Overfunctioning.

Staying busy.

Taking care of everybody else.

You got so good at surviving that nobody noticed you were struggling.

Oof….😵 Pause. Breathe. 🤎

And maybe…

neither did you.

Because when survival works, we rarely question it.

We just keep doing it.

Keep moving.

Keep producing.

Keep showing up.

Keep pushing through.

Your coping skill became your personality.

The people around you call you strong.

Reliable.

Independent.

Resilient.

But sometimes those labels hide a painful truth:

The version of you that kept you alive isn’t always the version that can help you heal.

How do you know if you’re escaping?

When being alone with your thoughts feels harder than staying busy.

When silence feels uncomfortable.

When rest creates anxiety.

When there is always another task, another goal, another distraction waiting.

And underneath all of that is usually a much harder question:

“If people saw the real me, would I still be loved?”

This resonates deeply because what once protected me during difficult times became a source of exhaustion and disconnection over time. What helped me most in learning to heal was allowing myself to recognize that being "strong" and "reliable" didn’t mean I had to ignore my own needs or suppress emotions. Instead, it meant creating space to simply be present with discomfort. Like the author’s reflection, sometimes just taking a breath—without needing to fix or prove anything—can be the first step toward profound healing. I also noticed that the fear of showing my true vulnerability held me back. The question "If people saw the real me, would I still be loved?" became a critical moment of reckoning. Facing that fear helped me connect with others more authentically and reduced the pressure to perform or hide pain. In practice, I started to prioritize moments of rest even when it felt uncomfortable, resisting the urge to immediately fill my time with tasks. Quiet moments became opportunities for reflection and self-compassion. Over time, this shift led me away from burnout toward greater emotional resilience. From this perspective, healing is not about transforming into someone new overnight but about unlearning burnout habits and reclaiming the ability to breathe even when the storm still rages. For anyone caught in the cycle of high-functioning survival, know that it’s okay to pause, breathe, and begin healing on your own terms.
