I've made an ecosystem inside of a Hennessy bottle

When I first embarked on this project, I was fascinated by the idea of a self-contained world, constantly recycling its own water and nutrients. It's truly a mini ecosystem bottle project that offers endless wonder. If you're thinking about creating your own, here's what I've learned makes for a successful, beautiful, and happy little world. First, the foundation is key. I started with a drainage layer, often using lava rocks at the very bottom. This prevents waterlogging for the roots. On top of that, a thin layer of Fiberglass window mesh can help keep the substrate from mixing into the drainage layer. Next, activated charcoal is a must – it acts as a natural filter, keeping the air and water fresh and preventing mold or foul odors in your closed ecosystem. After the charcoal, comes your terrarium substrate, which is essentially the soil where your plants will live. I like to enrich mine with a bit of leaf litter to mimic a natural forest floor and provide nutrients. And for a truly self-sustaining ecosystem, don't forget the tiny clean-up crew: springtails! These little guys are incredible at breaking down decaying matter and keeping the terrarium healthy. When it comes to plants, choosing the right ones is crucial for a mini ecosystem in a bottle. I've had great success with various mosses and small, humidity-loving plants. For instance, Leucobryum glaucum (often called Cushion moss) and Dicranum scoparium (Mood moss) create a lush, soft carpet. For taller elements, I enjoy using Ficus pumila 'Quercifolia' (Oak Leaf Ficus) for its delicate leaves, or even a trailing plant like Portulacaria afra 'Prostrata' (Trailing Elephant Bush) if I have a bit more space. For a pop of color, Fittonia albivenis 'Ruby Red' (Ruby Red Fittonia) is a fantastic choice. And don't forget some Virgin cork bark for added texture and a natural look. Setting up your self contained ecosystem in a bottle is a rewarding process. Make sure to clean your bottle thoroughly. Once assembled, give it a good watering, enough to see condensation, but not so much that it's pooling excessively. Then, seal it up! The beauty of a closed ecosystem is that it requires very little attention once established. You might need to open it briefly every few weeks if there's too much condensation, or add a tiny bit of water if it looks too dry. Observing the cycles of your plant in bottle ecosystem is truly captivating. It's more than just a decoration; it's a living science experiment right in your home!
