Nelson Nevada Ghost Town

... Read moreHey everyone! If you're anything like me and love finding hidden gems off the beaten path, then you absolutely have to check out Nelson Ghost Town in Nevada. I recently made the trip there from Las Vegas, and honestly, it was one of the highlights of my Nevada adventure! It’s the perfect antidote to the bright lights of the Strip, offering a fascinating glimpse into the state's rugged past. Getting there from Las Vegas is super straightforward and part of the fun. The drive time from Las Vegas to Nelson Ghost Town Nevada is usually only about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic and how many times you stop for photos of the stunning desert landscape. I recommend taking US-95 South, then turning left onto NV-165 E towards Nelson. The road itself is well-maintained and offers incredible views as you head deeper into the picturesque Eldorado Canyon. Expect to see vast expanses of the classic Nevada desert, with mountains rising dramatically in the distance. It’s a beautiful contrast to the urban sprawl of Vegas, and I found myself pulling over a few times just to soak it all in. Make sure your gas tank is full before you leave, as options are limited once you’re on the road. Once you arrive at Nelson Ghost Town, you're stepping back in time. This isn't your typical manicured tourist attraction; it's a wonderfully authentic and slightly eerie collection of old buildings, abandoned vehicles, and mining relics. The main attraction is the Eldorado Canyon Mine Tour, which I highly recommend. It takes you deep into the Techatticup Mine, one of the oldest and richest gold mines in Southern Nevada. Our guide was fantastic, sharing stories of the boom-and-bust days, the dangers the miners faced, and even some local legends. Beyond the mine, the entire area is a photographer's dream. You'll find rustic shacks, vintage cars and trucks seemingly left exactly where they broke down, and even a crashed plane that's a popular backdrop for photoshoots. I spent hours just wandering around, imagining what life was like for the prospectors and families who once called this remote area home. It's a truly immersive experience that brings history to life. For anyone planning a visit, I have a few tips. First, wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be doing a lot of walking over uneven terrain. Second, bring plenty of water, especially during the warmer months – the Nevada sun is no joke! I went in the spring, and it was already quite warm. There’s a small general store on site where you can buy some snacks and drinks, but it's always good to be prepared. Third, allow yourself at least 2-3 hours to explore, especially if you plan on doing the mine tour. Lastly, while the general area is free to roam, there’s a small fee for the mine tour and for professional photoshoots. It's a small price to pay for such a unique and memorable adventure. Whether you're interested in history, photography, or just a cool escape from the city, Nelson Ghost Town is an unforgettable stop on any Nevada itinerary!

Here are a few flics from a clear, calm night out in the remote Nevada desert. Out here in the west, time seems to drag on, the sagebrush sways a rhythm, and the wind continues to whistle just as it did 100 years ago..
