There's nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked bread filling your home, especially when it's a recipe passed down through generations! Today, I'm so excited to share with you my go-to recipe for Honduran Pan Dulce, a delicious sweet bread that's a staple in many Honduran households. It's perfect with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, and it brings back so many fond memories every time I make it. Making Pan Dulce might seem a little intimidating if you're new to baking with yeast, but trust me, it's simpler than you think. The key is in the kneading and letting the dough rise properly. The ingredients are quite basic, and you probably have most of them in your pantry already. To get started, you'll need: 8 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup granulated sugar 2 sticks (1 cup) salted margarine (or butter for a richer taste) 2 large eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 2 cups warm water (divided – one cup for yeast, one for kneading) 1 teaspoon salt 2 ¼ teaspoons (one packet) active dry yeast Here’s how I make this delightful Honduran sweet bread: Step 1: Activate the Yeast First things first, we need to wake up our yeast! In a small bowl, combine 1 cup of the warm water (make sure it's not too hot, around 105-115°F or 40-46°C is perfect) with a pinch of sugar and the active dry yeast. Give it a gentle stir and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes. You'll know it's ready when it gets foamy on top – that means your yeast is alive and ready to make your bread beautifully airy! Step 2: Combine Dry Ingredients In a very large mixing bowl, whisk together the 8 cups of flour, the remaining 1 cup of sugar, and the 1 teaspoon of salt. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Step 3: Add Wet Ingredients Into the well, pour the activated yeast mixture. Add the 2 eggs, the vanilla extract, and the softened salted margarine. Begin to mix everything together, gradually incorporating the flour from the sides. As the dough starts to come together, slowly add the second cup of warm water, little by little, until a shaggy dough forms. Step 4: Knead the Dough Now for the fun part – kneading! Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough for about 10-15 minutes. This is crucial for developing the gluten, which gives pan dulce its characteristic soft and chewy texture. I usually knead until the dough becomes smooth, elastic, and springs back when gently poked. Step 5: First Rise Lightly grease a clean large bowl with a little oil. Place the kneaded dough in the bowl, turning it once to coat the top. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size. This is what we call the first proof. Step 6: Shape the Pan Dulce Once the dough has doubled, gently punch it down to release the air. Turn it out onto your lightly floured surface again. You can divide the dough into smaller portions to shape into individual rolls, or make one large loaf. For individual rolls, I typically divide it into about 12-16 pieces, shape each into a smooth ball, and place them on a greased baking sheet, leaving some space between each. Step 7: Second Rise Cover the shaped pan dulce with plastic wrap or a towel and let them rise again in a warm spot for another 30-45 minutes, or until they look puffy and have nearly doubled in size. This second rise ensures a light and airy texture. Step 8: Bake! Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Once preheated, bake the pan dulce for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom. If you're baking a larger loaf, it might take a bit longer. Let them cool slightly on a wire rack before serving. The aroma alone is enough to make your mouth water! I love to enjoy mine still warm, perhaps with a little extra butter and a strong cup of Honduran coffee. It's a taste of home and comfort in every bite. I hope you try this recipe and love it as much as my family and I do!
