Joseph’s life is a reminder that circumstances rarely tell the whole story. Genesis 39:2 says, “The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a successful man.” Yet when those words were written, Joseph was a slave in Potiphar’s house. By human standards, he looked defeated, forgotten, and powerless. If you’re feeling that way today, be encouraged by Joseph’s example.
Joseph’s faithfulness in humiliation and obscurity eventually brought him before Pharaoh, where even a pagan ruler recognized something extraordinary about him. Pharaoh said, “Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?” (Genesis 41:38). When Pharaoh placed Joseph over Egypt, he removed his signet ring and put it on Joseph’s hand (Genesis 41:42). Joseph could now act in the delegated name of the king.
In Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son, the father restores his returning son by placing a ring on his hand (Luke 15:22), a sign that he was no longer a servant but a son with restored standing in the household. Rings in the ancient world signified identity, inheritance, and authority granted by someone greater.
For believers today, our “ring” is not a piece of gold; it is Christ. We have been raised and seated with Him in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6), sharing in His authority. That means you are not meant to live with a slave mentality defined by circumstances, fear, or limitation. Your identity flows from what Jesus has entrusted to you.
Paul explains it this way: “Those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:17). The same God who was with Joseph is with you, and His authority cannot be canceled. When life looks like a pit or a prison, victory is still coming.
So don’t let your situation write the final chapter of your story. The Lord is with you, and His authority rests upon you. Live not as a slave to circumstances, but as one who has received authority to reign in life by the grace of Christ.
Press on!
