Proverbs 17 : Day 17 ✨🍋

Proverbs 17: 28 “ Even a fool is considered wise when he keeps silent… discerning when he deals his lips.”

-Sometimes we need to shut up and sometimes we need to speak up! Simple.

-On the other hands, the one that opens his mouth too much is likely to start lying and maybe even gossiping!

It is more value of silence and can be better to remain quiet rather than to speak foolishness.

✨ Lord, help me to be quiet✨

... Read moreIt’s incredible how timeless the wisdom in Proverbs is! After reflecting on Proverbs 17:28, the idea of how a fool is considered wise when silent really stuck with me. We often think we need to fill every silence, but this verse is a powerful reminder that sometimes, the most profound thing we can do is simply listen and hold our tongue. For me, this isn't just about avoiding gossip or saying something foolish, which the original article touched upon. It's also about cultivating a spirit of discernment. When we rush to speak, especially when emotions are high (like the 'express strong emotions' mentioned in some of my personal Bible notes), we risk creating unnecessary 'conflict' or misunderstanding. Think about those moments when you've been quick to react in an argument, only to regret your words later. That's exactly where the wisdom of Proverbs 17 steps in, urging us to pause. This lesson from Proverbs 17 also ties into broader principles about the 'purpose of proverbs in the Bible' – it's all about practical wisdom for navigating daily life and relationships. It’s not just about what not to say, but also about the intention behind our words. For instance, Proverbs 17:3 talks about how 'silver and gold are tested in the fire, but the Lord tests the heart.' This reminds me that our words often reveal what’s truly in our hearts, so choosing silence can sometimes be a way to guard our heart before speaking. But what about 'speaking life scripture' or being a 'healing verse' for others? Does silence contradict this? Not at all! This proverb isn't suggesting we should never speak. Instead, it’s about discerning the right time and the right words. Sometimes, speaking life means offering a carefully considered word of encouragement, a prayerful blessing, or a gentle truth. It means ensuring our words build up, rather than tear down, and are offered with love and wisdom. When we do speak, our words should be like a 'healing verse,' bringing comfort and understanding, not criticism or judgment. I've found it helpful to think about how this applies in our digital age too. It’s so easy to type out a quick, reactive comment online. But pausing, reflecting, and even choosing 'to remain silent and be thought' rather than jump into every debate, can truly save us from a lot of heartache and regret. It helps us avoid 'mocking the poor' or showing 'pride of children' through careless words, as some other verses in Proverbs 17 implicitly warn against. This daily 'Proverbs challenge' has truly been a journey of personal reflection for me. It’s about more than just reading the words; it’s about making 'handwritten notes' in my heart and applying these ancient truths to my modern life. What does Proverbs 17 teach us? It teaches us the profound power and responsibility of our words, and equally, the profound power of our silence for true wisdom and discernment.
