How does a rookie learn to prepare?
How does a rookie learn to prepare?
Good preparation is pivotal to making your friends' first trail run a memorable and safe experience.
1.Drills: Build different strength
- Familiar with the Slope: Not just running flat, but having to practice running up-down the hill, or using stairs to strengthen thigh and calf muscles.
- Practice Balancing: Try running in a park with an uneven surface, or practice administrative postures that strengthen balancing, such as standing on one leg.
- Core Strength: A strong core muscle will help you balance better on rough ground.
- Do not overdo: Start from a short distance and a path that is not too poor, gradually develop your own potential.
2. Important equipment: Indispensable companion
Equipment for trail running is designed for maximum safety and efficiency, unlike conventional road running equipment.
- Trail Running Shoes: The most important thing is designed with deep and large treads (Outsole) for good grip on all skin types, strong structure to protect feet from rocks and roots, and good impact support.
- Hydration Vest / Pack: Trail running is time consuming and often does not have frequent water points like road running. Water packs are essential to carry water, energy gel, phone and other emergency equipment.
- Suitable clothes: Choose a breathable, fast-drying fabric and may need a windbreaker / raincoat if the weather is uncertain.
- Other accessories:
- Trekking Poles: Supports and reduces the burden of the legs, especially on steep routes.
- Headlamp: Very necessary to run during the morning or night.
- Buff cloth: All-purpose, available with turban, dustproof nose closure or sweat lining
3. Study the route and prepare for nutrition.
- Know the route: Before going down, you should study the route information well. Distance, Elevation Gain, Aid Station and Cut-off Time
- Energy and Water: Trail running uses much higher energy than road running. Should prepare a power gel, small candy or high energy food with you and sip water consistently throughout the run.
4. Run consciously and safely.
- Looking the way forward: Always look at the path about 2-3 steps in advance. To plan footwork and evade obstacles.
- Short Step: A short step allows for better posture and balance when you encounter unexpected surfaces.
- Walk when steep: No need to run all the time. Walking up a very steep path is a better energy saving and walking down a very steep and slippery path for safety.
- Don't Run Alone: If going to practice on an unfamiliar path, there should always be friends.
Trail running is not just an exercise, it's about connecting with nature, challenging your own limits, and discovering the beauty hidden between the trails. Let's just have good preparation. My friend's first trail run will definitely be the beginning of something new.
