Why does "sunscreen" affect running performance, not losing to other devices?
Most runners focus on new tech shoes or breathable clothes, but you know, "sunscreen" is a key device that directly affects our Running Economy without losing anything else.
Why does letting sunburn make us run "slower" and "faster"?
1.Burnt Skin = Uncooled Body (Thermoregulation)
The centerpiece of long-distance running is the management of "heat."
- When the skin is attacked by UV radiation until it burns (Sunburn), the skin blood vessels expand and inflammation occurs.
- This process will disrupt sweat gland function, making it harder for the body to cool off.
- As the heat builds up in the body (Core Temperature), the heart has to work harder to pump blood to feed the skin instead of sending it to the muscles. As a result, Pace falls and tires faster.
2. Water loss and cumulative fatigue
Sunburned skin loses its ability to retain moisture.
- The body loses more water through the skin (Transepidermal Water Loss), leading to dehydration or dehydration more easily.
- When the blood thickens from dehydration, the heart needs to pump harder, resulting in an abnormal spike in the Heart Rate, even at the same speed.
3. Energy wasted on "repair"
Instead, the body directs nutrients and oxygen to move muscles for running.
- Instead, the immune system must divide those resources to "repair skin cells" that have been destroyed by UV.
- Rehearsing on a sunny day without protection is like doubling the burden of the body to work unnecessarily hard.
Choose "Performance Line" sunscreen. What to watch?
For the most efficient running, the sunscreen selected by the runner should qualify as follows:
✅ Extreme Water & Sweat Resistance: Sweat Resistant, Excellent Water Resistant, Not Easy to Peel When We Sweat A Lot
✅ Non-Greasy & Weights: The texture must be light, not sticky, and must not "block" pores until it makes us feel hot inside.
✅ High SPF & PA: Prevent both UVA and UVB, recommended at SPF50 + PA + + + + and above
Sunscreen is not only about preventing dark skin, but keeping "body temperature" stable so that we can maintain speed and run longer as the goal is set before going out on Long Run or doing outdoor activities. Don't forget to "put in a device" called sunscreen.
