🧽 Room I'm cleaning: At home Hair studio

🧼 Products: Bleach products

🧹 Tips: clean as you go, but sometimes you have to do a deep clean. The struggle of doing hair in a room full of carpet. My best device is don’t be afraid to get on your hands and knees.

... Read moreOkay, so you've seen my quick post-Thanksgiving clean-up, but let's get real about what it takes to keep an at-home hair studio truly sparkling – especially when you're dealing with the aftermath of a busy period like Thanksgiving! Running your own salon space, even if it's just a corner of your home, means cleanliness isn't just about aesthetics; it's about hygiene and professionalism. Since many of you are looking for a proper cleaning checklist, I wanted to share my detailed routine that goes beyond just a quick tidy. My Essential At-Home Hair Studio Cleaning Checklist: 1. Daily 'Clean As You Go' & End-of-Day Rituals: This is HUGE. Preventing build-up saves so much time later. It’s all about maintaining a clean environment consistently. After Each Client: Sweep or vacuum around your station immediately. Hair strands get everywhere! Wipe down your styling chair and workstation with a disinfectant spray. Sanitize all combs, brushes, and tools you've used – I usually have a Barbicide jar going or use a UV sterilizer. Change out capes and towels for fresh ones. End of Day: Empty all trash bins. Give your mirrors a quick wipe-down to remove product residue and fingerprints. Sweep/vacuum the entire studio floor thoroughly, paying extra attention to corners and under furniture. Disinfect any communal surfaces like doorknobs or counters that clients might have touched. Restock clean towels and supplies for the next day, ensuring everything is ready for your first appointment. 2. Weekly Deep Clean Tasks: This is where you really tackle the grime and keep things fresh. It's more thorough than daily maintenance and addresses areas that might get overlooked. Floors: For us carpet-dwellers, this means a serious vacuum session, often with attachments to get into corners and edges where hair and dust love to hide. I swear by a good carpet cleaner solution for spot treatments, especially for color spills – acting fast is key! If you have hard floors, a good mop and floor cleaner are essential for a streak-free finish. Remember my tip: “don’t be afraid to get on your hands and knees” for those stubborn spots and forgotten areas! Surfaces: Thoroughly clean and disinfect all countertops, shelves, and product displays. Wipe down the outsides of product bottles that might have gotten sticky with hairspray or styling products. Don’t forget the often-neglected areas like chair bases and trolley wheels. Sinks/Shampoo Bowls: Scrub these down with a good cleaner – I often use bleach-based products, diluted properly, to ensure everything is sanitized and sparkling. Don't forget the faucets and handles, as these are high-touch points! Tools & Equipment: Give all your hot tools (flat irons, curling wands) a good wipe once they're cool to remove product residue. Clean out any hair from clippers or trimmers. Check and clean air filters on your blow dryers if you can, as this helps with efficiency and air quality. Laundry: Wash all your capes, towels, and aprons. I often add a capful of disinfectant to the wash cycle for extra peace of mind and to ensure everything is truly clean and fresh. 3. Monthly/Seasonal Maintenance (The Super Deep Clean!): These tasks are less frequent but crucial for overall hygiene and longevity of your space. Walls & Baseboards: Dust and wipe down walls, especially near styling stations where hairspray or color might drift. This makes a huge difference in the overall appearance. Lighting: Clean light fixtures and bulbs for optimal brightness. Dust can significantly dim your lighting, impacting your work. Windows: Wash windows and mirrors thoroughly, both inside and out if possible, to let natural light flood in. Product Organization: Go through your product inventory, check expiration dates, and reorganize everything. Get rid of expired items and declutter messy shelves. Equipment Check: Inspect all electrical cords and equipment for wear and tear. Safety first! Ensure everything is in good working order. Dealing with a “room full of carpet” can be a real headache for a hair studio, especially when you’re dealing with hair, color, and product spills. My best advice, as I mentioned, is to invest in a powerful vacuum and a good spot cleaner. For color stains, act fast! The quicker you get to them, the better your chances of removal. And always make sure your bleach products are used safely and diluted correctly to prevent damage to your surfaces or yourself. This detailed checklist helps me stay on top of the inevitable mess and ensures my clients always walk into a clean, professional, and welcoming space, even after the busiest of holiday rushes like the Thanksgiving Aftermath Cleaning I just tackled!
