what to expect when becoming a DOG MOMMA đļ
HEY! do you wanna become a dog mom? here are a few tips and things to expect! From me & my boy Bentley!!
1- Research ideal breeds, their needs & health expectations â¨
Before getting a puppy, you should always research breeds & what it takes. Do you need to groom them often? Are they good with kids? The same goes with their health, what is their life expectantcy? Do they have any health issues? Are you prepared to deal with any health issues that may happen? Bentley is a Cavalier King Charles & i am prepared every vet visit to potentially hear a concern on his heart- which is normal for his breed!
2- Puppy sleep â¨
The first few weeks to months, to a year, your puppy may need to sleep more than expected. Itâs definitely a shocker because all people mention is their energy! But something to remember is they need to grow! Babies sleep a lot to grow- so do they!
3- Shopping â¨
This is the fun partâĻ sorta! It doesnât matter if itâs before you get them, or after, but here is the most ideal list of needs for puppies!
- bed
- crate
- bed crate
- toys
- teething chews
- food
- treats
- training treats
- collar, harness & leash
- pet tag & id
if you would like to do it instead of investing:
- nail clipper &/or file
- brushes
- shampoo
- waterless shampoo
- shears
4- PICTURES â¨
Be ready for your camera roll to be FULL of them & just them. They are only small and puppies for onceâĻ so take those pictures and videos!!!!
5- Research Training â¨
Training is hardâĻ just an FYI. Research the things you need, like a clicker, maybe a buzzing collar, a whistle? Find what fits your needs! Then research tricks & how to teach them. Take deep breaths & stay positive, It may take awhile but it will be worth it. Just a tip- TIRE THEM OUT! Play with them, let them run around, walk them- when theyâre tired, theyâll focus harder (especially with treats!!!)
6- Financial Wise â¨
This is pretty self explanatory. Dogs are expensive, toys are expensive, food is expensive- be ready for that!
7- Vaccines â¨
Make sure they get vaccinated! Puppies have many visits in their first year of life just to stay protected!!! Make sure you keep them alone (unless you have other pets at home) until they get cleared by their vet- you DO NOT want to see them with parvo. Protect them. This includes only walking them in your vicinity until cleared.
8- Sleepless Nights â¨
Again, just like a baby you will have some sleepless nights. Between the small bladders, puppy energy & just wanting to be with their owners, be ready for that. When taking mid-night potty breaks, keep them quick! Keep toys out of their crates, cover their crates in something dark to know âhey itâs bed time!â
9- BOND â¨
This will be easy. Dogs are easy to love. Give them time and respect, sometimes they wonât want hugs and love. When you have time to love them, take it in. Dogs LOVE positive affirmations, especially from their Momma!
10- ENJOY IT â¤ī¸â¨

Becoming a dog mom can be both exciting and daunting. Start by thoroughly researching the breed you plan to adopt; different dogs have varying needs, temperaments, and health concerns. Consider factors like grooming frequency and life expectancy, and be prepared for potential health issues, especially with breeds prone to specific conditions. Remember that puppies require plenty of sleep, especially in the early months, so set up a cozy sleeping area conducive to rest. When you welcome your new puppy, stock up on essentials, including a comfortable bed, crate, toys, and necessary grooming tools. Taking photos to capture those adorable moments is a must, as puppies grow quickly and their antics are worth remembering! Training your new friend is crucial; however, it can be quite challenging. Equip yourself with the right training aids, research training techniques, and be patient as you help your puppy learn. Regular play and exercise can greatly enhance their focus and eagerness to learn. Financial preparedness is also necessary when bringing home a puppy. Be informed about the costs associated with food, toys, vet visits, grooming supplies, and unexpected expenses that may arise. Vaccination is a critical step; ensure that your puppy receives all necessary shots and stays away from unvaccinated dogs until cleared by a veterinarian. Expect some sleepless nights as your puppy adjusts; it's similar to caring for an infant. Finally, bond with your puppy, offer plenty of positive reinforcement, and enjoy the journey of being a dog mom. Embrace the love and joy your furry companion brings into your life!
